Houston Job Fair

Did you know about the Houston Job Fair?

If you are tired of trudging all over town to do your job search, maybe you can attend the job fair and meet the companies who are hiring face to face! The job fair will be held at the Hilton Houston, Hobby Airport from 11am-2pm Jan. 18, 2010. Registering online gives you free access to the company list and by adding your resume you get your name in front of the companies attending! If you can't make the job fair in January, there is one nearly every month of the upcoming year!

Did You Know About Finding the Perfect Box?

Did you know about finding the perfect box ?

I love the Seinfeld bit about looking for the perfect box, and when you finally find it, they put you in it! I have this thing about hanging on to the perfect box, just in case I need it. My husband finally said I had to throw away all the perfect boxes out in the garage. He asked why I had them anyway. From time to time when I sell stuff on ebay, I don't want to have to hunt around for the perfect shipping box and I certainly don't want to have to buy one! But for now, we have a clean garage...

Did You Know the Pit Helps Keep Avocado Dip Fresh?

Did you know the pit helps keep avocado dip fresh?

I love fresh guacamole. Whenever I have any left I put it in the fridge where it invariably turns brown on top. I usually stir it and finish it anyway. But yesterday I remembered to try a trick I had heard many times. I always put in lemon juice but this time I remembered to put the pit back into the dip. When I took it out of the fridge today, it was still a bright, fresh green!

Did You Know People Still Out of Work?

Did you know people still out of work?

I have known several people out of work this year. Being out of work during the holidays can bring added stress to this time of year. I know many continue the job search-from a Boston job search to an LA job search-is seems that people all over are still looking for work. Hopefully the new year will bring a change for the good for all those looking for work.

Did You Know We Are Training by Time?

Did you know we are training by time ?

In training for our triathlon, my husband got a training schedule which has us training by time instead of distance. In some ways this is almost freeing. I don't have to worry about marking out routes, figuring out mileage or counting laps. We just swim/bike/run til our time is up! The times vary and increase but so far, I think I like it!

Did You Know I Got A New Computer?

Did you know I got a new computer?

We have been talking about getting a new one all year, but just kept putting it off. So the other day my husband kicked me out of the house while he set up a birthday surprise for me. When I came home I had a new desk and iMac computer! (Then we had to finish cleaning and rearranging rooms to make everything fit right!) I also get a class to help me learn the Mac and have them transfer all the stuff from the old PC to the Mac. I don't think I need everything from the old computer on here, but at least I will be able to have my pictures and bookmarks that I like! My kids love the new Mac, especially the wireless mouse! I think I will too. It is really really nice. A bit overwhelming at first, but a pretty cool birthday present!!

Did You Know Who Won the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament?

Did you know who won the NCAA women's volleyball tournament?

In a heartbreaking loss for the University of Texas, Penn State won their third consecutive title. The Longhorns burst out with a 2-0 lead. The Lions then regrouped and came back to win the last three games. It was a hard fought win but Penn State now retains the title and has gone 102 consecutive wins!

Did You Know About NCAA Volleyball Tournament?

Did you know about the NCAA Volleyball Tournament?

The regional championships are going on this weekend, with two Texas teams playing in Omaha, NE. Texas A&M and UT are both in the finals along with Nebraska and Iowa. Practices start today and are open to the public. Friday's practices are closed. Games begin Friday evening and end on Saturday night. The winners from this tournament move on to the championship in Tampa, Fl next weekend.

Did You Know About Dominica?

Did you know about Dominica?

This small island in the Caribbean is located in the West Indies between Martinique and Guadalupe. It is becoming a prized tour destination. Some of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie was filmed in Dominica. I have been to Dominica a couple of times. I am sure that much has changed now. Dominica is not associated with the Dominican Republic-to which I've never been. (I guess if one day I do make it to the DR I can check out the punta cana hotels) Dominica is its own commonwealth and is a proud island country that is called the Nature Island of the Caribbean.

Did You Know About Exercise Burnout?

Did you know about exercise burnout?

I was talking with a lady at the gym this morning. She is a 60+ triathlete! We were talking about burnout. How we are sort of getting sick of our workouts. How it can lose the fun and we just keep drudging through them. I told her some things I do to try to break the monotony. For example, swimming 32 laps in a pool is rather dull. So I'll do things like change lanes when it's not too crowded (16 laps in one lane, 16 in another; or 11 laps in three different lanes.) Or doing different exercises. Or different routines. Or adding a new machine, like the elliptical from time to time. My husband says also that your body gets used to doing the same thing over and over and you have to do new things for "muscle confusion". He says you get better results that way. Just some ideas to keep the burnout under control.

Did You Know It's That Time of Year?

Did you know it's that time of year?

We have really been going all out on the sweets, already! I made a good pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. Two actually. They were gone quickly!! And then there was the homemade chocolate pudding pie. MMMM! and homemade whipped cream. Then there is the usual ice cream which I keep my husband supplied with. And my son's cookie dough. Hm, I guess Santa better leave us all a fat burner in our stockings!!

Did You Know What My Kids Got in the Mail?

Did you know what my kids got in the mail?

My kids had a small envelope package from their grandmother last week. We did not know what it was. I guessed it was pictures as it was marked "fragile, do not bend". Well, none of us were prepared for what it really was! When my son opened it, he looked, and looked some more. Then he said it was really funny! It was the wish bones from the turkeys at Thanksgiving last week! Unfortunately, they were broken in shipping. The kids tried to pull one apart from the very top, but there just was not enough left to grab on to. It was a fun idea and we were definitely surprised!!

Did You Know the Top Gifts?

Did you know the top gifts?

What are some of the top gifts this holiday season? Of course I would imagine they are things like iPods, LCD HDTVs, new cars are always hot, any kind of electronic. I heard on the news that one of the top things for kids is the Zhu Zhu pets hamsters. wow! it reminds me of when Furbie was hot. My niece wanted one of those. As for the fake hamsters, well, maybe they are better than having real ones around!

Did You Know About the Pink Glove Dance?

Did you know about the pink glove dance?

I was sent this fun video to promote breast cancer awareness. I bet it was a lot of fun to shoot this video! I like the way it is put together and how workers in every part of the hospital are involved. I just wonder how many pink gloves got used for this?!

Did You Know About Credit Card Changes?

Did you know about credit card changes?

It may be old news but most of us have heard by now about the credit card changes coming in February. Just another step in government regulation. I don't like to use credit cards. We do have one in the fire safe for an emergency. Otherwise we don't use them. As for the coming changes, I don't know enough about them to know whether or not I could accept credit card changes. I am sure there are many that should have already been in place. I think that college kids should not be the target of credit card marketing. And I am certainly against any penalty or fee against those who pay their bill in full each month. I don't like the government regulation. I think folks should be smarter in using credit. And if they get in trouble with it, they should pay the consequence, even if it takes 7-10 years to clear it.

Did You Know How to Bypass a Fuse?

Did you know how to bypass a fuse?

In talking about thought processes this morning, my husband told me how to bypass a fuse. He said that you put one end of a screwdriver on the end of one wire and the other end of the screwdriver on the end of the other wire. You do this with the metal part of the screwdriver. This then acts as the conductor. I asked why you would do this. He said he knows people do it to steal cars. The key acts as the fuse in the ignition, so if they break the ignition housing they can hot-wire the car to start it. I am sure this was a very simple explanation of the process.

Did You Know What I Love to Give Guys With Trucks?

Did you know what I love to give guys with trucks?

Whenever I am buying gifts for guys with trucks, it's pretty easy to get together a bunch of truck accessories. I like to get a bucket and fill it with all kinds of goodies for the truck. Anything like chamois, tire cleaner, air fresheners, and such items make great gifts for truck drives both young and old. These work great for gals who drive trucks too!

Did You Know a New Exercise for Plantar Fasciitis?

Did you know a new exercise for plantar fasciitis?

A friend of mine who does a lot of running told me today about an exercise he did when he had plantar fasciitis. He took a long running sock. In it he placed a one pound can of food. Then he tied the sock in a knot. He put the sock in between his big toe and the next one with the knot above his foot and the can below. Then he lifted the can up and down by bending his foot at the ankle. I have not tried this yet but am planning on giving this a try. I am working hard at healing this nagging problem!

Did You Know I Use Less Safety Products?

Did you know I use less safety products?

As I got ready to vacuum the other day, I pulled out another plastic cover. I just left it out. I got to thinking about having nothing but big kids around here. I put those covers in six years ago when I baby sat a friend's baby. He's no baby any more! I started thinking about having to use no real
safety products around the house any more. Sure, we take care of things and try to be as safe as possible, but with teens around, there are way more things I am worried about than sticking their fingers or a toy into a socket! I wish there were "safety products" to guard a teens heart, mind and soul that were as easy to implement as putting a plastic cover into the outlet.

Did You Know We Met Switchfoot Today?

Did you know we met Switchfoot today?

My daughter and I were blessed to be able to go today to a local Street N Greet to meet the Christian rock band Switchfoot! They came to a LifeWay book store nearby and we got to take the opportunity to stop by and meet them! The line was not too long. Everyone was allowed to have one item signed and to take photos as we moved through the line. We were going to have the cd cover from an old cd signed but as we moved through the line we did find one of the newest cds. So I bought that and had them sign that cover instead.

The guys from the band were really nice. They each shook my daughter's hand and asked her name and noticed her volleyball shirt. Several asked her if she played. They were very nice and seemed to be truly glad to meet their fans today.

As we got in the car, my daughter was not so sure the new cd would wait to be a Christmas present for her brother. We have listened to it today, to make sure it's good of course. She is still in debate as to whether she will give it to her brother!

Did You Know About New Driver Laws?

Did you know about new driver laws?

In our state several new driver laws were instituted on Sept. 1. This affects everyone, particularly kids who are working on getting their licenses. I like many of the new laws. They have upped the required hours for kids to get their permits and licenses, which I think was much needed. They have changed some of the seat belt laws. They have added laws about cell phone usage in school zones. So licensing a new driver is now about more than getting free insurance quotes (which is still important!) Be sure and stay up to date on all the current new driving laws.

Did You Know One Reason I Love my Husband?

Did you know one reason I love my husband?

At Valentine's I made my husband a list of reasons why I love him. He pulled one out yesterday. It said "you can do so many things". He asked what I meant by that. I told him that he takes care of so many things around here. He keeps my car running. He fixes door handles and changes air filters and fixes toilets and replaces lights and fixtures. There are many many things he does to take care of our family. And it saves money too that he can do so much himself. Just another reason I love him so much!

Did You Know How to Email a Song to a Friend?

Did you know how to email a song to a friend?

I heard a song today that really hit me. I wanted to send it to my husband on his phone. I did not know how to do it. My son said it is possible but he did not have time to help me figure it out just then. After we found the song on Playlist.com I searched through the FAQs to see if it was possible. Not only is it possible, it’s easy! Just find the song. Under the title is a “share” button. Push it and it says you can email it to a friend.

Did You Know About Trapeze Class?

Did you know about trapeze classes?

I saw on the Biggest Loser last night, a trapeze class. This is a new trend in the exercise world, with studios in LA, New York, Boston and DC offering classes. It is not for everyone. It is for those who can hold their own body weight with both hands on the bar. It seems like it would be fun, different and really add a new element to a workout. There is still some debate on how well it works your core and how many calories it burns.

Did You Know I am Wracking My Brain for Gift Ideas?

Did you know I am wracking my brain for gift ideas?

Usually I have some good ideas for what to get most folks on my list. I have done all right this year. Some of the hardest people are already taken care of. But this year, the teens seem to be hard for me. I do not know what to get my niece nor my own kids. Most of this is because of the prices of the gifts they want. I mean, a car, LCD tvs, laptops, and even season tickets this year, are just out of my budget for Christmas gifts. I sure hope Santa comes up with some great ideas in the next few weeks!

Did You Know I Took a Day off to Work?

Did you know I took a "day off" to work?

I actually took two days off of my regular stay-at-home-mom job to be an extra in a local commercial this week! It was done by Nike and shot at Space Center Houston. It was fun, I learned some things, and got a good check for some Christmas shopping too!

There were only five of us extras which was pretty cool! I had thought there was going to be large crowd of us, as had been the case in the two other shoots I had participated in. I liked the small group of us. We got to visit and I learned things from these "actors" who do this kind of work more often.

I even had a bit part with some lines! The commercial is actually going to be aired on the internet. It should be released around Thanksgiving. I don't know how it will turn out and if I'll even really be in it. But hey, it was fun and I earned a little money too!

Did you know how exhausting it is raising teenagers?

Did You Know We Have Tile Flooring Throughout Our House?

Did you know we have tile flooring throughout our house?

After a water mishap several years ago, my husband wanted to put in tile flooring, throughout the house. This way, any more water damage would not harm the floors. We chose dark natural tile flooring. It is easy to clean and hard to tell when it's dirty! The only downside is that it is loud and echo-y in the living area, and somewhat cold, though that can be considered a plus in the hot humid summer!

Did You Know About our Visit to TCU?

Did you know about our visit to TCU?

We had a great time. The college has done a great job of making the day fun for the teens and showing them the best the school has to offer. The day started at 8am with a free breakfast (fruit and breakfast tacos) and registration. During this time, facts about the school were shown on screens. Little did we know there would be a "test" later with prizes (t shirts) for the first one with the right answer! Then we were taken on a campus tour. After this we got to choose three sessions to attend to learn more about specific things about TCU. Next was lunch (free) with student speakers. Then we were off to tour two dorms. Afterward, the students got to choose a probable major and go tour that department. Last, we were given refreshments and filled out surveys and asked any last questions. Throughout the day, we acquired little freebies-a backpack, pen, sticker. After the program was over, my son and his friend wanted to talk to the basketball coach. Practice was already underway, but they were allowed to sit and watch the end of the session. Before leaving town, we had to hit the bookstore for fan gear. What a great way to get kids (and parents) excited about college!

Did You Know My New Running Focus?

Did you know my new running focus?

I just got back from the Doctor. I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis (again) for the last 6-8 weeks. I could not get it resolved on my own, so now I am letting the doc help me out. Deep tissue massage, lots of stretching and he now told me to use a foam roller as well. As for my running he said I could run some. Run about 1/4-1/2 mile, then stretch for at least five minutes. Then I could probably run up to another mile. And of course stretch again. I have one stretch I have to do at least five times a day. As for my running focus, he said it is not distance and it is not time. It is about getting my leg stretched out. During this time I have not done a good job on changing my diet. I don't want to resort to weight loss pills! At least there is still swimming, weights, spinning and the elliptical machine to keep me going. And a new focus.

Did You Know About TCU Mondays?

Did you know about TCU Mondays?

Once a month, Texas Christian University hosts a Monday of activities for high school juniors and seniors. From 8am-3pm, students will participate in programs geared for them. They will have breakfast, special interest meetings, financial aid information, campus tours, lunch and department visits. Because of the large amount of students attending these activities, they will not be able to attend a class on these days.

I registered my son for the next TCU Monday. It should be a fun day looking at college life. Perhaps it will get him interested in really finding out what kind of college he'd like to attend.

Did You Know a Good Gift for Older Teens?

Did you know a good gift for older teens?

In continuing to peruse a shopping list, you may come across older teens you need to buy for. This seems to be a hard group to buy for, but can actually be easy, especially if they have their own car. Buying auto accessories for older teens is always a hit! I bought a bucket of auto goodies for my friend who turned 20 and he appreciated it. My husband even told our friend that if he was not going to use the stuff, to give it to him!

Did You Know What to Do With Leftovers?

Did you know what to do with leftovers?

I try to serve leftovers or eat them for lunch. However sometimes there is such a small amount left that it really won't serve for a meal. If it is meat, I'll give it to the dog. But when it's fruits or vegetables, I usually end up throwing it away. I recently read a great idea for leftover veggies. Keep a baggie in the freezer into which you put the small portions of leftover veggies like carrots, green beans, corn, etc. When you get enough, put them into a soup! Perfect! As for the leftover fruits, I now do the same. Only when I get enough, I use them to make fruit smoothies.

Did You Know a Good Gift for Active Parents?

Did you know a good gift for active parents?

Since holiday shopping will begin soon, has for some, people are looking for just the right gift, at just the right price. As I drove past a resale shop yesterday, I noticed the line of baby strollers out front. It's been a while since we had a need for a stroller, but I do remember how glad we were to have a jogging stroller. When your kids are young, it's hard to get a work out in. But having a jogging stroller allows you to go for a run or walk whenever you can.

Did You Know About the Ultimate Dog Show?

Did you know about the Ultimate Dog Show?

This is the first thing we saw at the Texas State Fair last week. It was very HOT inside the arena but the kids really enjoyed this show. It ended up being my nephew's favorite. There were several dogs who did frisbee tricks. One dog walked on his hind legs. There were dog races. But best of all was the dogs who caught frisbees while jumping over and into a pool of water. I was glad to see that the dogs seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Did You Know About Current Theater Seasons?

Did you know about current theater seasons?

It seems that many area theaters have lined up some really good seasons this year. I guess because people are being more careful how they spend their money, the shows they choose for entertainment must be worth the money spent.

Local shows include The Sound of Music, Little House on the Prairie, White Christmas, Miss Saigon, Hairspray, TAO Martial Art Drummers (these are no stainless steel drums!), Porgy and Bess, and Mary Poppins.

There are some great shows to take in, much better than the movies coming out lately!

Did You Know Abstinence is being Taught in Some Public Schools?

Did you know abstinence is being taught in some public schools?

I was actually unaware of this. I noticed in my daughter's health book, there was talk of what abstinence is and how the term is usually applied to sexual behavior but that it is appropriate when talking about any risk behavior. I agree with this. Especially when talking to teens.

Then, I got a note home from my son's school saying that they would have a week long lesson on abstinence and risk behaviors. I signed it and was interested in how they would approach it. Of course, I did not get much detail from my son, but he said they did talk about lots of different "risk behaviors" not just sex. He said they talked about all aspects and consequences of these risk behaviors. I do appreciate that. I think teens need to hear these things and know that abstinence is a choice for them and one that will allow them no consequences. Actually, I know that abstinence really does have consequences, but they are easier to live with than the consequences of participating in the risk behaviors.

Although many people do not like abstinence taught as a choice, I am glad they are including it in the lessons.

Did You Know How to Get Discount Tickets to Mary Poppins Dallas?

Did you know how to get discount tickets to Mary Poppins Dallas?

When we decided to go to the State Fair in Dallas, we started doing some searching. While looking at the fair, we learned that Mary Poppins is also playing in Fair Park. With your tickets to the show you can get into the fair free for that day. Then, when I found out how to get half price tickets to see the show, it became a no brainer. So we are heading out to go to the fair and see Mary Poppins.

If you are heading to Dallas, be sure to check their facebook page for the discount code for half price tickets . There is also a code for a family four pack of tickets for $99 .

Did You Know I Have a Blog with the Same Name as a Book?

Did you know I have a blog with the same name as a book?

As I was finishing a short biography on Corrie ten Boom last night, I read that she had written a book called Each New Day. I had not heard of this book before and was pleased that I had chosen that as the name of one of my earlier blogs ! I'd like to think that great minds think alike, but I know that I am nowhere on the same plane as Ms. ten Boom.

Did You Know You Can Get Free Theater Tickets?

Did you know you can get FREE theater tickets?

The month of October marks Free Night of Theater throughout the nation. Simply go to the site and choose the location nearest you. You will find listings for FREE performances of local and national shows. For example, in our city, there are several listings for local performances including Agatha Christie, Into the Woods and Little Shop of Horrors. I was also thrilled to see that there is even one free performance for Meet Me in St. Louis! Most of these shows will only allow you to get two free tickets. You must make reservations through the site. These free tickets will be ready to reserve Oct. 5. I don't know if you can get tickets to more than one show, but I am going to try!

Did You Know My New Scrabble Word?

Did you know my new Scrabble word?

I am always on the lookout for a new word to play in Scrabble, particularly if it uses the "Q". My daughter actually found one for me yesterday while doing research for a school assignment. She asked me what "cacique" is. I told her I'd never heard of it. So she looked it up and found out that it is a tribal leader from Mexican or West Indian regions. It is also a variety of Oriole. I was happy because now I've got a new word to use in Scrabble!

Did You Know Eating Fast Food Makes You Fat?

Did you know eating fast food makes you fat?

I think there are lots of folks who would agree with this. It seems my daughter is convinced of this. Sunday night on our way to church I mentioned how just a couple of years ago I used to take her to Taco Bell every Sunday night. It was her last year before she could go to youth activities and it sort of became a tradition for me to drive through her favorite fast food for dinner. When I reminded her about it, she asked "How am I not fat?!" That cracked me up. But at least she knows eating right is better than eating poorly and relying on diet supplements to make up the rest.

Did You Know How To Write a Two Voice Poem?

Did you know how to write a two voice poem?

I have seen these before but never assigned them. My daughter has been assigned one this week for a History project. I really like it! All you need is two sides to one story. Then you can pose the stories side by side. Then you write the lines side by side, trying to have them reflect each other. Each column represents a different person (or voice.) If they speak at the same time, put their words on the same line. If one is silent while the other speaks, leave their line blank. Here is an example of a two person poem:

Graduation Poem by Stephanie Klose

Here is a little different take on one:

In Eternity's Eye by Shelly Bryant

Did You Know How to Lose Belly Fat?

Did you knowhow to lose belly fat?

Ok, yes, belly fat is unsightly. But more than that, the deepest layer of belly fat has been linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even cancer. There are lots of claims going around about how to lose belly fat fast. It seems to be the only real way is by exercising regularly, and yes, eating right. It may not be as fast as some like, but it is the only way to really keep it off.

Did You Know About Mechanical Turk?

Did you know about Mechanical Turk?

Mechanical Turk is sponsored by Amazon.com. Here you can find lots of trivial tasks that pay to get the job completed. Many of them only pay one penny but some pay a few bucks. They are not much pay, but I love the small tasks that can be completed in a few minutes. The earned money is put into an Amazon account to spend at their site.

Did You Know About Ferrari?

Did you know about Ferrari?

I don't know much about these cars. I know that "Thomas Magnum" drove one in his TV series! The other day in spinning class the girl in front of me had on a t-shirt with Ferrari facts printed on the back. I learned a few things from reading the back of her shirt during class. For example, Ferrari is based in Italy. The color red is the "national race color" in Italy. Ferrari also manufactures items like perfume, sunglasses and laptops under its name! If you drive a Ferrari, I guess another good fact to know is where you can get Ferrari parts.

Did You Know How to Keep Score at a Volleyball Game?

Did you know how to keep score at a volleyball game?

I have just been learning. Now keep in mind this is junior high volleyball. I can do ok as long as nothing "unusual" happens, which of course in jr. high, you never know! At any rate, I have been blessed to have the lady who taught me to sit by me during the games, to help make sure I have everything covered. But we have a tournament this weekend, so we'll see how well my talents have been honed! If you want to learn to keep score, get a good score book that has the instructions in front and the symbols at the top. You can find instructions online. Then, attend some games to practice your skill! I would suggest a junior high game as they are much slower moving and instructional than older groups.

Did You Know I Got a Response from the School?

Did you know I got a response from the school?

Basically, they will not do a "mass viewing" (this is at the high school) but will allow individual social studies teachers to air the president's speech next Tuesday, as it applies to state standards. How they can know which parts will and will not apply to state standards on a live event, I don't know. When I again voiced the concern about the method in which this is being done (during the school day, no parental involvement-not even a note sent home, taking advantage of kids' vulnerability and impressionability, a captive audience) the principal simply reiterated what she had just said.

I was glad for the prompt reply from the principal and two school board members. However my concerns are still looming large. I am not sure yet what our next course of action will be. I am hoping to keep my son home from school in protest of how this is being handled.

This situation has generated lots of conversation in our area.

Did You Know About Obama's Scheduled Speech to School Children?

Did you know about Obama's scheduled speech to school children?

I have been hearing about this impending speech today. I don't have all the details yet. I found this press release on the White House website. Here is the video where Obama tells student interviewer Damon Weaver that he will be speaking to school kids on Sept. 8.

That is the day after Labor Day, traditionally the first day of school for many students in the nation. It falls right after a holiday. Many parents may be unaware of the speech. However, principals have been notified by the Department of Education Secretary and teacher packets on what to do for lead-in and post-speech activities are included (you will find the files there.)

It appears the speech will be televised on C-span and the White House site. However, it is during the school day and the teachers are to "guide" the discussion and evaluation of the speech.

This is a very scary tactic to me. It is blatant propaganda in my mind. If a conservative or religious leader were to use this avenue into our childrens' minds, there would be a great uproar among many.

I hope parents will do their homework on this! This is a definite call to arms for parents. We cannot allow for this to go unnoticed or unspoken. We cannot allow the government and their schools to blatantly indoctrinate our children without our say, though we may have already become accustom to it. We need to know what is being taught and presented to our kids. We need to understand the method being used to seduce a captive and vulnerable audience.

Wake up parents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did You Know What We Did On Our Beach Holiday?

Did you know what we did on our beach holiday?

I promised the kids we would do nothing, no museums, no tours, no planned outings. Just sit on the beach and relax! First thing, the kids wanted to eat at the "original" Whataburger.

My husband and I skipped the fast food and went to eat at Pier 99 once the kids were done.

We spent two days at Whitecap beach. My cousin had recommended this beach on Padre Island. We preferred it to Corpus Christi Bay. Very clean, nice sand (not many shells though), great waves and not too crowded. You do have to have a parking permit to park on the beach, but it's good for the rest of the year.

On our last morning, the kids were able to jet ski (you can only do this on the bay, not the National Seashore.)

It was their first time and they really enjoyed it!

I even saw dolphins a couple of times (enlarge the picture and look very close on the right for the fin!)

Did You Know About Iraqi Bundles of Love?

Did you know about Iraqi Bundles of Love?

I just learned about a great project that is quickly drawing to a close. I am not much of a sewer (not at all in fact!) but do have lots of craft supplies, including fabric scraps. My mom sews so I thought between us and a few friends we could help out with the project.

A soldier in Iraq will be leaving in September. He is wanting to distribute fabrics and other sewing and kitting supplies to the people in his area (which now includes much of Northern Iraq) before he leaves. He will be accepting bundles until Sept. 7.

If you want to help out with this or know someone who might, please go to his blog to get all the details.

Did You Know About the Windmill Farm in Corpus Christi?

Did you know about the windmill farm in Corpus Christi?

I had no idea there was a windmill farm in Corpus until we saw it while driving out of town the other day. I tried to get some photos. They are not very good, but you can get an idea.

I looked up some information about it and found there was and perhaps still is a big debate going on about it. There are to be 240 windmills put into acreage in the area. Here are some of the issues being debated over:

Wind Energy in Kenedy County

What it is: Wind farms generate electricity by using wind to turn giant blades that rotate on turbines, an alternative to power created by utilities using coal, natural gas and other sources. The following projects will place roughly 240 turbines on thousands of acres of Kenedy County property.

- A $400 million Peñascal Wind Farm on property owned by the John G. Kenedy Jr. Charitable Trust

- A $800 million Gulf Wind project by Australia-based Babcock & Brown Ltd. on property owned by the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation.

Environmental Issues

- The Coastal Habitat Alliance contends the projects and infrastructure to support them will destroy critical wildlife habitat.

- Wind farm developers are working with scientists to study the environmental impact of the farms. Data so far contradicts the alliance’s statements, developers say.

- The alliance says the turbines are a threat to birds that migrate through the region.

- Developers cite studies that show a majority of bird migration occurs above the wind turbines which tower more than 3,000 feet into the air, and that the rotors are large enough to allow incoming birds to avoid them.

- The alliance says the roads and impermeable surfaces at the facilities will thwart the flow of groundwater and fresh water inflows that feed the Laguna Madre.

- Developers said they have scientists and data including hydrology analysis and storm water planning to negate that claim. They say the project layouts also identified and avoided wetlands.

Did You Know We Found a Condo for this Week?

Did you know we found a condo for this week?

We actually stayed for three nights in a condo on Corpus Christi beach. It was a small but cozy place, just right for our family. There were bunk beds built into the entry way in which the kids slept, a small bedroom with a queen sized bed for us, one bath, a kitchen area and den area with a tv. There was also a balcony with a great view. We were on the top level with no one on the left side of us. It turned out to be a nice place to stay. The beach area was ok, but we preferred driving about 20 more minutes to Padre Island for a cleaner more enjoyable beach. Here is the view from our condo.

Did You Know We are Off for a Last Summer Fling?

Did you know we are off for a last summer fling?

We are actually taking off for a couple of days to spend at Corpus Christi beach. We will stay in a condo on the beach (ok, my husband says it's not on the beach as it's really on the bay, but it is called the beach and it's on sand with water coming up, so I say it's a beach!) Anyway, we just want to hang out on the beach doing nothing. I am not sure we will even visit any of the sights and must-sees in Corpus. We just want to relax and do nothing! The kids do want to jet ski, so we'll look for that. Otherwise, a last minute get away to relax!

Did You Know My Computer is Slow?

Did you know my computer is slow?

I don't really know why. It takes forever to do anything on here. We have high speed internet so that is not the problem. We probably have too much stuff on here which adds to the problem. Maybe we need more sdram. I don't know. I just know that it takes forever to get booted up and forever to get anything done on here!

Did You Know How My Wonder Woman Costume Turned Out?

Did you know how my Wonder Woman costume turned out?

When my husband told me he was doing a youth event based on superheroes and he wanted everyone to dress up, I wasn't sure if I would. I looked at a few costumes and knew they were not for me. But after finding a site online where other women and girls had made their own Wonder Woman costumes, I knew I could do that! So I headed for the thrift store. I found everything I needed there. A shiny red tank top, A blue skirt, boots, ribbon, red and white material and a foam visor.

I* put the ribbon in the shape of a W on the shirt. I** spray painted the boots red, then added athletic tape along the top and down the front. I** cut the visor into the shape of a crown, spray painted it gold and added a red glitter star. The skirt did not work for me, so I found blue athletic shorts at Academy and cut and glued white stars to them. I also used spray painted foam for the wrist bands. I put "No Fray" along the edge of the red material and attached it as a cape.

I think the whole thing came together just right! And I only spent $15!

Did You Know About My Custom Made Costume?

Did you know about my custom made costume?

Next week we are hosting a youth activity at church in which everyone is supposed to come dressed as a superhero. I found a website that showed several gals' custom made Wonder Woman costumes. I figured I could do that too. I found the perfect pieces at the thrift store and my mom is helping me to put it together. For the bottom, I was going to use a royal blue taffeta skirt. The one I got was ankle length but knew my mom could cut it and hem it. I tried it on and she measured it. When I went back to try it on after that, I could not fasten the skirt! It was only two days later!! It's been a long time since I felt like I needed diet pills, but after that incident, I felt horrible! Instead of coming home and going on a crash diet though, I found a pair of shorts that will work just fine!!

Did You Know How A Locust Sheds Its Skin?

Did you know how a locust sheds its skin?

Though I've seen locust shells many times since I was a kid, I doubt if I could explain how the insect sheds its skin. Since a picture says a thousand words, I thought these would suffice to show the process:

Did You Know Where to Find a Free Notary Public?

Did you know where to find a free notary public?

Since I needed to get an affidavit notarized to claim an insurance refund check, I called my mom. She used to be a notary, but she said she is no longer doing it. I asked her if she knew where I could go. She said our bank should have a notary. So I went in to our bank and sure enough, the first lady in the lobby is a notary. She just verified that I have an account there and she was happy to notarize the document free of charge!

Did You Know How to Fix a Leaky Faucet?

Did you know how to fix a leaky faucet?

My husband finally realized that we will have to replace the whole fixture to our kitchen sink. It's not that old, about three to five years. It seems that whenever folks do work these days, it cannot be counted on to last. Anyway, he has it on his list this weekend to change that fixture. I guess I will be looking at Moen, Delta and Kohler fixtures to see what best suits us, and our budget.

Did You Know How to Obtain a Copy of Proof of a Former Address?

Did you know how to obtain a copy of proof of a former address?

We received a letter from the Texas Dept. of Insurance saying that money is owed to us. We do have to prove that we lived at a certain address from 1991-1992, which we did. But that was so long ago that we don't know if we have any documentation from that time. All we can think of is to look for old tax returns. My husband is supposed to look for that this week. Other than that, I don't know how to prove we lived at an address 15 years ago!

Did You Know We Still Have a Swing Set?

Did you know we still have a swing set?

It seems as if swing sets are a must in yards where young kids live. And even though our kids are full fledged teenagers, we still have a swing set in our yard. We have young friends who come to visit and young nephews too, so I am not ready to get rid of it just yet in spite of the fact that some of the accessories need attention and we have to mow around it. And it's not unheard of for my daughter to go out and swing or play on the rings.

Did You Know You Can't Make Ice Cream Without Rock Salt?

Did you know you can't make ice cream without rock salt?

My husband wanted ice cream last night. He had been gone for over a week, so I was happy to oblige. I went to the store to get the necessary items. But I did not realize I was out of rock salt. So I consulted the trusty internet and found folks saying you can use table salt in place of rock salt.

This did not work at all for me! I left the ice cream maker running for two hours or more. And it never turned to ice cream. So I put it in the fridge til today when I could go back and get rock salt. It seemed to work out ok. It did set up though my husband said it was still too creamy.

If you find yourself without rock salt and wanting to make homemade ice cream, I suggest either go back and get it or wait. Or you can experiment like I did and have a blog topic!

Did You Know About Walk In Tubs?

Did you know about walk in tubs?

I have seen commercials for these. They are tubs installed that nearly look like a hot tub, as the sides are higher than normal bathtubs. They look to be the perfect thing that would be great for an older person or someone with an injury. You can get in and out of it easier with the door that is located in the side. That way you don't have to step up and over the side of the tub.

Did You Know How to Open a New Tab?

Did you know how to open a new tab?

Again, this is another one of those easy things that my daughter just taught me! When I am on the computer I always want to open several tabs. So I usually go to my bookmarks and choose a site to open in a new tab. My daughter said all I have to do is go to "file" and choose the "open new tab" option! Wow! That was easy!

Did You Know About the Speech Pill?

Did you know about the speech pill?

I believe now there probably is a pill for everything. I found this "speech pill" designed for those who suffer from anxiety over public speaking. I guess this is a big deal for those required to give speeches as part of their job. The pill looks like is contains supplements that help with stress and help to relax the body and mind. I am not sure I would take it, but I did find their tips on giving specific speeches to be helpful.

Did You Know I Can't Even Get on My Own Blog?

Did you know I can't even get on my own blog?

Since my internet is down again/still, I am at my mom's using her computer. I have some blogging to catch up on. But on my madameblogalot page, I have forgotten the password. So I can't even log in to it! I may have to end up changing my name if I don't get in anytime soon!!

Did You Know Where to get Cattle Supplies?

Did you know where to get cattle supplies?

Being from Texas, folks in other parts of the country think everyone here owns a cow!Not so! But I know people who do!

Like the ranch we stayed at last weekend. He had over a hundred acres with plenty of cows! We drove the golf cart through the pasture, right through the herd! We saw some babies too. We were surprised to see that cows had horns! We thought only bulls did. But these were cows. And they had horns!

Who knows, if we ever get a dream place with a few acres, we may get a cow or two, to get our ag exemption of course. Then I would need to know where to get cattle supplies! I had no idea you could order them online! Always good to know when you live out in the middle of no where!

Did You Know How to Find Inklings?

Did you know how to find Inklings?

Hey Inklings, Elizabeth Grace, can you get a hold of me? I have some things to send you. I found your my space page but I am not a member so could not message you there (I guess I could join, but I sure don't want to!) also, thanks to comcast, my internet has been out all week. If you can, email me and I will get back w/ you sometime. Or call me like you did before. I know you want me to get this stuff in the mail to you.

And if anyone else knows how to get hold of inklings, if you can pass the message on for me, that would be great!

Thanks!

Did You Know About Our Weekend Getaway?

Did you know about our weekend getaway?

My husband and I celebrated our 22nd anniversary last weekend. We were blessed to get away for the weekend. We took a motorcycle trip about two hours away to the middle of nowhere! We found a bed and breakfast which rents cabins out in New Baden, TX. What peace, quiet and solitude awaited us! A cute cabin just right for the two of us (there is a larger one that would work w/ older children.) A swimming pool, ponds, cows, stars, and no TV, telephone or internet! Just the two of us and rest and relaxation! I will post some photos soon. Some of our favorite things were the pond, the quiet, the stars at night and no interruptions! We were able to reconnect and spend some relaxing time together, just the two of us!

Did You Know About Mesothelioma?

Did you know about mesothelioma

I learned that this form of cancer is classified as "a rare form of cancer" and "is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium)." (cited from Mesothelioma, http://www.mesotheliomaweb.org/v/mesothelioma3.htm?sckw=mesothelioma&scsrc=google&sccrtv=vid3&scacct=26). It is contracted by breathing asbestos in a work or home environment. It can be contracted by breathing asbestos for as little as two or three months. Mesothelioma has a long latency period. People exposed to asbestos in the 1940s-70s are now being diagnosed with this cancer. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are key in battling this cancer. There is lots of research going on in this area of cancer study.

Did You Know Epsom Salt is for Sprains?

Did you know epsom salt is for sprains?

I learned this week that soaking in epsom salt is good for minor sprains and bruises. I did not know that. But my daughter turned her ankle again last week. I wish I'd have known earlier, but thankfully her coach told me about this. When I bought it, the box says it is good for sprains and bruises. It is apparently the magnesium that works to reduce the swelling. You can soak the injury three times a day, thirty minutes at a time.

Did You Know About Jason's Deli Menu Changes?

Did you know about Jason's Deli menu changes?

I don't like to eat out very often. But my mom wanted to take me and all her grandkids out to lunch yesterday. We ended up at Jason's Deli. They have a veggie wrap that I like and I can get it with fruit. As we looked over the menu yesterday I noticed several changes. They have organic wheat tortillas, blue corn chips and a new kids' menu. As we waited for our order I noticed a sign on the table talking about the kids' menu. All meals are less than $4 and none contain any trans fat, high fructose corn syrup or nitrites! I was really impressed. A quote from the owner said that if he was not comfortable having his grandkids eat it, then it's not on the menu! That means we can all be more comfortable taking our kids out for a healthy meal at Jason's Deli.

Did You Know An Easy Way to Make Enchiladas?

Did you know an easy way to make enchiladas?

I usually only save enchiladas for special occasions since they are so time consuming. I used to fry up each tortilla (no, I don't make the tortillas!) which was time consuming, hot and messy. But I found a recipe that says you can spray both sides of each tortilla and put them in a 350 oven for 3-4 minutes to soften them up before rolling them into enchiladas. When my family was due to arrive home from camp, I decided to try this method. It worked great! Easy to roll, and no hot greasy mess! And lots less time! I may make enchiladas more often now!

Did You Know X Rays are Done on CD Now?

Did you know X Rays are done on CD now?

When I went to meet my husband to pick up my son after he broke his collar bone at camp, I wanted to be sure and get the x rays. My husband handed me all the paper work from the hospital (I am so glad he was there!) and I went into the bathroom at the gas station. While inside I was thinking "OH! Where are the x rays?" So I asked my husband as soon as I got out. He pointed out the CD that he had handed me. That is where the x rays are! We brought them home and our doctor stopped by that evening. She loaded the x rays onto our computer to look at! Pretty cool!

Did You Know I Don't Drink Coffee?

Did you know I don't drink coffee?

Neither does my husband. Our son likes to drink it though! I do have a small coffee maker that I keep on hand for whenever we have company who likes to drink it. And I try to keep some coffee in the freezer for such occasions (which have proven few and far between!) I don't even know how to make the coffee, so the guest has to end up doing it! I would never invest in some fancy Capresso machine; I'm glad I only paid $10 for my coffee maker!

Did You Know I was Able to Find a New Route?

Did you know I was able to find a new route?

I am not used to driving through the city. So when taking my son back to camp, I was ok with leaving after rush hour. However, as we came to downtown at 8pm, I noticed the traffic completely stopped. I hated to sit through that. I have sat there before for an hour and we were meeting my husband so I did not want to wait. I decided to brave it and follow another highway around. I knew it would meet the highway we wanted on the other side of downtown, I just was not sure how to get to it. But as I followed it along, I noticed there were signs saying I could catch the highway I wanted. I was thrilled when I saw the entrance and got on with no problem. It might have even ended up being faster than if the traffic was flowing at a normal rate on the highway I had abandoned! I was very happy to have taken the chance to try a new route. And even happier that I did not get lost or have to back track at all!

Did You Know About Ikea's 15% Off Sale?

Did you know about Ikea's 15% off sale?

I just read through the latest Ikea ad. It looks like they are having a nice summer sale for folks who are moving. On the last page, I came across a special 15% off deal. It is for folks in our area who had nothing better to do while "in the dark" after hurricane Ike. For anyone bringing in their baby's birth certificate dated June 1-July 4, 2009, they will receive an additional 15% off their entire purchase!

Did You Know How I Avoided Being Team Mom?

Did you know how I avoided being "team mom"?

Last night we registered my daughter for her homeschool volleyball league. I did not/do not want to be team mom, one of the only positions left for volunteers by the time I saw the list. (Never mind I already had the water bottles from last year and thought I stated my intention to be the "water mom".) So instead of signing up for team mom, which I am not cut out for, I signed up for "team photographer"! Thankfully they only want photos and not videos, since I don't have camcorders but I do have a digital camera. I am not sure how they will turn out, as I am no great photographer, but I would sure rather do that than be team mom!

Did You Know Where to Get a Free Root Beer Float Tonight?

Did you know where to get a free root beer float tonight?

Sonic is offering FREE root beer floats to customers tonight between 8pm and midnight. They did this same promo a couple of years ago. There was a huge response at our local Sonic. I guess that's why they made the hours later for tonight. From what I remember the floats are rather small so you may want to hit up Sonic twice for some extra refreshment!

Did You Know HGH is Not Just Used by Athletes?

Did you know HGH is not just used by athletes?

Athletes using HGH to "enhance performance" (which is still debatable!) is old news. And perhaps it isn't so new to hear of the other people who are using HGH for other reasons as well. When it was told that Roger Clemens wife was using HGH it might have just been someone stepping out to expose what many already knew. HGH has been touted as a "fountain of youth" in anti-aging, so it is not unheard of to see those concerned with aging and appearance to use HGH regularly.

Did You Know About The Tabs on Aluminum Foil Rolls?

Did you know about the tabs on aluminum foil rolls?

My cousin said she got an email in which she learned something useful she had never known all these years. Of course she knew I too would appreciate it! Maybe you too have had rolls of aluminum foil or plastic wrap come out as you tried to pull out and tear off a piece. This happened to me again tonight. And then I remembered what my cousin told me. On the side of the box are perforated pieces which can be pushed in as tabs to hold the roll in place! Very useful tidbit of information I think!

Did You Know to Use Brass Nails when Working with Oak?

Did you know to use brass nails when working with oak?

While watching a home improvement show today I learned that when making something that needs to support weight, like a ladder, out of oak wood, it is best to use brass nails. There is a naturally occurring acid in oak wood that over time can eat through steel, making steel nails not the best choice. Apparently this acid does not affect the brass nails that way.

Did You Know About Muscle Confusion?

Did you know about muscle confusion?

I have used the same three workouts for several years now. I get bored with it and don't really see any results in strength or toning. My husband does a different workout nearly every week. He calls this muscle confusion and says it is good both for the body and mind. So yesterday I worked out with him. I did his strength training routine and then ran one mile on the treadmill, spent twenty minutes on the elliptical machine, and ran one more mile on the treadmill. I am not sore or anything today, but it was different and took away the boredom.

Did You Know How Texas Band Students Can Earn College Vouchers?

Did you know how Texas band students can earn college vouchers?

I just learned today that Texas band students in grades 6-12 can earn college tuition vouchers by playing Taps at Veteran's funerals! Once they become performance ready, they can send out letters letting hospitals, chaplains, funeral homes and other like places know that they are volunteering to play Taps at the funeral of veterans. After they have played they fill out a form and send it to Austin. They will be given a $25 voucher good for tuition or required fees at an institution of higher learning! For more information you can read here .

Did You Know How to Find the Best Insurance Rates?

Did you know how to find the best insurance rates?

Just like anything else it takes time and effort to do your homework. When looking for the best auto insurance we could find when our son became a driver was not easy. In the end, we just went with our current carrier. The same can be true when looking for life insurance. It can be confusing and take lots of time. That's why using online term life insurance comparisons can be very helpful. Simply fill in the form and have the company compare rates for you. This allows you to make a choice without having to spend so much time doing the leg work of comparing!

Did You Know School is Over?

Did you know school is over?

At least for my daughter it is. I stretched it out as long as I could! As it is right now, it looks like I will have only one more year of her at home and then she says she wants to go to public high school. I told her on Friday I thought about failing her this year, but I will just wait til next year and fail her for eighth grade so she just can't go to high school! :)

Did You Know About Safe Clear?

Did you know about Safe Clear?

On Monday I was traveling down the Interstate Highway taking my daughter to her volleyball camp. My car started sounding funny, lights came on and the steering was affected. I was in the far left lane heading onto an over pass so I could not pull over as quickly as I wanted. As soon as I could I pulled onto the shoulder and called my husband. He said he thought I threw a belt. After a couple of minutes I found the pulleys and belt and sure enough it was broken. Just then a wrecker pulled up behind me. I was informed that according to the county I had to be cleared off and he would tow me to the nearest gas station. As I began to speak, he said that it was a free tow. He took me to the station and even parked me in the shade. I was given paper work to read about the Safe Clear Program. You get towed up to a mile for free if your vehicle is inoperable and you have pulled onto the shoulder. He also told me that if it ever happened again all I have to do is call 311 and they will be out ASAP. Then he came back from his truck and returned my wallet that I had left in there! I was thankful for his help and honesty. My husband came and got the belt fixed within the hour! Knowing about the Safe Clear Program is a great piece of information to know!

Did You Know the Perfect Household Job for Older Teens?

Did you know the perfect household job for older teens?

My husband expects my son to help out with whatever household project is going on at the time. Last week, they worked on the Jeep that got flooded out. This week, we got a new water heater. As the frustration mounted and Dad had to go to the store for parts...it seemed as if the project just would not come together. So other parts were needed and the first ones purchased needed to be returned. So my husband gave Son the keys, the parts and the debit card to go return and purchase the parts. Pretty good way that Dad could continue working and Son got to drive around town (and I didn't have to do it!)

Did You Know How to Make a Wax Seal?

Did you know how to make a wax seal?

I helped my mom in her bible class last Wednesday. She was telling the third graders about how we are marked for God, how we are sealed for him. She asked them what a "seal" was. One boy talked about the Presidential seal! Mom went on to explain how letters and documents used to be sealed with wax long ago. After the lesson, the kids got to use different methods to attach a seal to their project folders. I was excited to get to help with making the wax seals. It was lots of fun and the kids thought it was pretty cool!

Mom was pretty cool to buy a wax seal kit! It contained six different candles and also stampers (not exactly a stamp-but the opposite. Instead of raised portions, the design was indented causing the wax to raise when stamped.) to place in the hot wax. We simply lighted a candle and dripped the wax onto the folder. Then, after letting it cool two to three seconds, each student places the stamp of his/her choice in the wax. Then we let the seal cool completely. They looked really great and the kids were proud of them!

Did You Know I've Got to Get Back to Running?

Did you know I've got to get back to running?

Ever since I did the half marathon on New Year's Day, I have not run over eight miles. By now I was hoping to be running at least ten miles with no walking, if not thirteen. That way I could stay in shape, stay strong, eat what I want without the aid of the top weight loss pills. Not only have I not worked my way back up to the mileage I was shooting for, I just don't even have the time. Getting in more than six miles is asking for a lot of time, especially when combined with other training. I have the desire, but can't seem to make it all come together. Hopefully soon, hopefully by the end of the year. If not, then probably when my daughter goes to public school. Then I will for sure need something to fill my day!

Did You Know Why Sport Arenas are called "Garden"?

Did you know why sport arenas are called "garden"?

One of my son's friends asked this question. Pretty good question. I looked up some answers online. Don't know how accurate they are, but they sounded pretty good! Here is what I got from Yahoo Answers:

"The word garden comes from the Latin 'geard' which means open space. Yard and GARDen come from this word.

Thus there all sorts of gardens, not just flower gardens...
For example: beer gardens, etc.

Madison Square refers to to the intersection that the arena is on, and garden is an open-spaced venue."

Another similar answer at the same site:

"The term "garden" in British English refers to an enclosed area of land, usually adjoining a building. Just another term for arena."

And last for fun:

"cause they used to grow championships there!"

Did You Know About Mosquitoes?

Did you know about mosquitoes?

I just found out some interesting facts about these little pests. Only the females bite. They use the protein from our blood to produce their eggs. They breed in water but live in shrubs, bushes and tall grass. They can lay up to 400 eggs in as little as one drop of water!

Did You Know About Changes to Propel?

Did you know about changes to Propel?

In the past, Propel sports drink has been about the only common sports drink I would let my kids have. But I have noticed a change lately. They have changed the bottles saying that they have reduced the amount of plastic used. That is a good thing. But it seems that in making the change they have also changed the ingredients. My mom bought some Propel at my suggestion and noticed it used high fructose corn syrup. She was surprised since I do not buy products containing that ingredient. I too noticed that in the newer bottles this was listed in the ingredients. They formerly used sucralose, which I am not a big fan of either, but I did compromise on it with my kids. So now we are all disappointed in the change of Propel. One more sports drink I won't buy. But that will save me some money too!

Did You Know We Were Flooded In Last Night?

Did you know we were flooded in last night?

That's right, just one week after having our Jeep Cherokee put out of commission by flood water in our neighborhood, we got flooded in at my uncle's house! The rain came down quickly again, about five inches. The streets leading out of his neighborhood were all under water. I made it to a church parking lot but my dad's car died. We pushed it into the parking lot and sat a few minutes. Then I returned back to my uncles to dry off and wait it out. Soon after, my cousin returned. About an hour later, my parents returned. We all stayed there until nearly 2 am waiting til the waters receded enough for us to get out.

Even on the way home, we saw many abandoned cars. Those with small fancy cars were hopefully smart enough to stay out of it. I know replacing those Corvette and Ferrari parts are not something they want to do every time the streets flood!

Did You Know a Way to Help Our Soldiers?

Did you know a way to help our soldiers?

I learned last week about a group of moms in the Houston area who are looking for donations to send to their children serving in the military overseas. It is a hard scrabble life for these men and women. They are longing for every day items. It is an easy way to give back to the men and women who are giving for us. I was given a list of items that these marines can use. It includes things like toothpaste, toothbrush, lip balm, bath soap, toilet paper, white socks, shaving cream, deoderant, and bandaids. Also desired are items like pudding cups, crystal light, coffee, pop tarts, salt and pepper, peanut butter, hard candy. These are items that are simple to pick up at the grocery store. They can be delivered to the marine moms who will pack them up according to regulation and ship them overseas. Check the website for more information. You can even make a donation through paypal to help with the cost of shipping these packages.

Did You Know About Energy Saving Light Bulbs?

Did you know about energy saving light bulbs?

I have been hearing how this is one of the easiest ways to save money on your energy bill. My husband bought a few a couple of years ago. I'd like to buy some more. They are becoming more popular and easier to find. They cost a little more, but last longer and use less energy. Right now I have a stash of Sylvania light bulbs that I need to use up (don't want to be wasteful in that sense either) and then I intend to start going to the new bulbs throughout the house.

Did You Know About our Saturday Deluge?

Did you know about our Saturday deluge?

I took my daughter to see Broadway Across America’s Wizard of Oz today. (Great show!) Just after intermission, I got a call from my neighbor. I did not answer since the show was underway again. After the show, my daughter said she had also gotten a text from another young neighbor. I knew something was wrong then…

I called back to find out that our neighborhood had flooded while we were gone! Everything was fine, no water in the house, though it did come up to the door and in the garage. The car that my son drives was parked out on the street. The water was up to the side door windows! By the time we got home, the water had gone down, but was still standing inside the Jeep (Cherokee)! It was gross! And we’ll see how well we are able to dry it out.

Here is a shot our neighbor took about 30 minutes after the water started receding:

Did You Know Summer is Coming?

Did you know summer is coming?

Not long until summer will be here! I know many people are regretting letting go of their New Year's Resolutions to eat right and lose weight. It's hard to stick with it. There is no magic pill (no matter what claims you hear!) I keep getting tons of emails-try Enphedra, look amazing in two weeks!, burn fat twice as fast!, and on and on....

Yes, summer is coming. But I think it's better to focus on eating right along with daily exercise. Try moderation. Try thinking about a wide variety of colors at each meal. Don't eat out, or at least cut out fast food. Then maybe you'll be ready for the beach when summer arrives.

Did You Know About Our Tri-County TEA Party?

Did you know about our tri-county TEA Party?

Yesterday a neighboring community hosted a TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party to protest the bail outs, stimulus and government overspending. There was a speaker from the Texas Railroad Commission, a local business man who is a Cuban immigrant, and the local U.S. Representative. Folks arrived with signs of protest as well as tea bags to sign and send to Washington. I was also glad to see a media truck on hand as well. It was good to see the area filled with local folks who are wanting to send this message to Washington.

The idea of the tea bags is a symbol extrapolated from the Boston Tea Party. One speaker said this is important because it's not just our tea that is being taxed, it's our lives and our children's and grandchildren's lives. One young girl was carrying a stop sign that said "Stop spending my future income". The congressman loved that. He spoke to the girl and took her stop sign back to Washington with him.

A chest was loaded with all the tea bags and the congressman will be taking these back to Washington with him to express our local dissent over the stimulus and wasteful government spending. As the trunk was being carried to his truck, one young boy ran up urgently yelling "wait, wait!" His tea bag was not yet in the trunk and he knew his lone bag must also make it in the trunk. It was a very fitting end to the scene. This young boy may not realize what a symbol he and his last urgent addition to the trunk exhibited, but the way in which it was played out was a perfect ending to our local Tea Party.

Did You Know About Our Night at the Celtics Game?

Did you know about our night at the Celtics game?

In trying to wrap up our adventure in Boston (nearly a month ago!) I will tell you about the "big event"! All my son cared about was getting to go to a Celtics game. He didn't care what else we did. So I splurged. I bought four tickets to a weeknight game-their only home game while we were in town. I had a chance at some better seats, but by the time I was ready to buy, all that was left were "nosebleed" seats. Although they were pretty pricey, we wanted to do this.

Even though they were high up, they were center court and we had a good view.

I bought them online through a ticket broker. It was hard to get tickets. It seems like Celtics tickets sell out fast. And I was surprised that it really was a well attended game, even though it was a week night.

We were really excited just to be in the "Garden".

Seeing the banners and the Celtic pride was lots of fun.

My son was disappointed that the Celtics had a couple of hurt players including Ray Allen. Also, their opponents, the Heat, played minus Dwayne Wade. Even so, it was a fun game. It was exciting that it even went into over time!! And how much fun that the home team came out on top in the end!

Did You Know About The Boston Sports Museum?

Did you know about the Boston Sports Museum?

This museum is located inside the Northbank Garden. Hours vary based on each day's events. We were lucky to get inside just before closing time on the day we chose to visit. You can purchase tickets inside the Garden and then you go to the museum's entrance. You need to have a cell phone with you because you are instructed to call the museum's phone number to have them come down and escort you up to a private level where the exhibits are displayed.

Due to our commute time, we arrived with only 30 minutes til the museum closed for the day. We were told we could hang around a few extra minutes, but most people allow an hour or more to see all the displays.

On exhibit are items from many of Massachusetts' different sports. Of course, there is lots there to see about the Celtics. There are also displays for the Red Sox, the Bruins, college sports, the Boston Marathon, the Olympics and I am sure others that I've left out.

We enjoyed walking through the corridors where the items are on exhibit reading through lots of the history of sports in Boston. I do wish we would have allowed more time, but we got to see most everything. I learned several things I'd not known enjoyed walking through the exhibits.

Did You Know About Pizzeria Regina?

Did you know about Pizzeria Regina?

I love pizza. So when I found out about a back street brick oven pizzeria in the Italian section of Boston, I had to give it a try. Regina's has been "world famous" since 1926. They use fresh ingredients and I believe even imported yeast. My kids and I could not get enough of the original extra cheese pizza, while my husband preferred the "loaded" ones!

Did You Know About Media Rooms?

Did you know about "media rooms"?

Our friends have a "media room". My daughter says it's pretty cool with black carpet and red walls. But she doesn't think there is enough seating. There are two "video chairs" on the floor, and other than that, you need to bring your blankets to lay on the floor. I don't know if they are planning on getting new furniture, maybe some Berkline theater seats, or if they are going to leave it open like that. Either way, I like having the TV in a place outside of the family room. I like the idea of "purposeful TV watching" as opposed to just having it on all day or being the focus of the family area.

Did You Know About the Bunker Hill Monument?

Did you know about the Bunker Hill Monument?

Across the Charles River in Boston, you can visit the Bunker Hill Monument. This obelisk was built in 1834, but not on the site of the actual battle of Bunker Hill. This memorial is actually closer in on Breed's Hill, Bunker Hill was further out. You can climb the monument and have a nice view back over Boston and out over the river. There are 294 steps to the top, no elevator. Across the street from the monument is a small museum. There is not a lot there, but on the second floor (yes, we climbed more stairs, but found an elevator when we were leaving!) we found a few things that interested us and we enjoyed listening to a narration about the battle. It is always amazing to listen to these stories of courage and patriotism that our forefather's fought for.
