Did You Know That Meat From Cloned Animals Has Been Ok'd?

It seems as if the U.S. government has ok'd the use of meat from cloned animals for our consumption. They say that there is no difference, after the first six months of life or so, in the meat of cloned animals versus that of conventional animals. One of the disputes arising from this decision is the need for labels on such meats. Although the meat from cloned animals won't be marketed for consumption for at least a year, there are two sides debating whether such meat should be labeled. One group says since there is no difference, there is no need to label such meat. Others say they will then lable "clone free" meats. This is debated as implying there are possible health risks with cloned meats. This will surely be a desicion eaters of meat will face in the relatively near future.

Did You Know That Pointsettias Are Not Toxic?

There is an urban legend following the traditional Christamas pointsettia plant. Originating in Mexico, there is a long-told story that a youngster, having no gift for the baby Jesus, picked a handful of weeds. These weeds were transformed into the beautiful red poinsettia plant.

Joel Roberts Pointsett is credited with bringing cuttings of the plant back to his South Carolina home in the 1820's. The plant was then named after him. The red part of the plant is not really the flowers, but modified leaves. The yellow part in the center is the actual flower.

Though this plant is not very palatable as it is rather bitter, it is not poisonous. So feel free to use these beautiful flowers in your home each Christmas.

Did You Know You Can Break Bones By Coughing?

Did you know that you can break bones by coughing? This is not all that uncommon either. About two years ago, I had a really bad cold and could not stop coughing. I tried to take it easy and rest as much as possible. When I finally began to feel better, I wanted to return to my morning jog. On the way home I felt a side stitch and slowed down. All day long this side stitch stayed with me and even started to feel worse. By the next day, when the side stitch was still there, I decided something just wasn't right. That evening I was in tears from pain. I called our family physician's assistant. She told me it sounded as if I had broken some ribs. When I told her that I hadn't done anything, since I had been sick, she inquired about the symptoms. When she learned of the coughing, she said it isn't rare that people will break ribs coughing when they have bronchitis! Sure enough, the next day I went in for x-rays, which revealed three broken ribs!

Did you know that plantar faciitis pain can be controlled?

Many people are plauged by plantar faciitis. This is a shortening of a tendon under the foot. It can be painful to even walk. This condition takes some time to heal. Controlling the pain during this time can be managed by a few simple methods. Sleeping with a special sock which keeps the toes pointed up and back helps. Stretching the tendon upon arising can also help. Icing the area and more stretching after exercise can help ease inflammation. Shoes and insoles designed to aid in overpronation can be a big help as well.

Did You Know That Baby Powder is Good for More Than Your Baby's Diaper Area?

I have found a couple of other uses for baby powder other than a baby's diaper area or as a body freshener. Baby powder is also good as a stain treatment for oils. If you spill oily food on your clothes, using baby powder as a treatment before washing helps to remove the stain.

Another use I have found for baby powder is as a remover of sand from the body. If your kids are playing in the sand, before coming in the house dust them with powder. This helps remove the moisture from the sand, making it eaiser to get the sand off. This works well at the beach too.
