Did You Know Some of my Favorite Sights in Bozeman?

Did you know some of my favorite sights in Bozeman?

It snowed the first night we got there, and we enjoyed sitting in the hot tub at the hotel looking out at the snow! We enjoyed seeing the mountains and the snow. There are some gorgeous houses built at the base of the mountains. We saw deer, a mink, and some interesting looking cows. I don't have pictures of everything, but wanted to post some of our favorite sights on the trip.

Did You Know About Where to Eat in Bozeman Montana?

Did you know where to eat in Bozeman, Montana?

We stayed in Bozeman for five days. We enjoyed the town and how friendly and helpful everyone was/is. We enjoyed most everywhere we ate. Each day we had breakfast at the hotel, so we don't have any comments as to where to eat breakfast in town. But we enjoyed all of our dinners.

Our first night we at next door to the hotel at Best Western's The Club. My husband had a good bison burger with sweet potato fries. The kids and I shared a mountain of nachos! Seriously, after the three of us were done, there were still enough to box up and take back to our room! They were good but too salty.

Our second night found us at a pizza parlor that quickly became our favorite place to eat in Bozeman-MacKenzie River Pizza Co. We shared some delicious pizzas that night and I decided that is where I wanted to go back for my birthday dinner. I was a little disappointed that I ate too much pizza to try the skillet cookie on my birthday, but the pizza is just that good! We also got a sandwich one day for lunch from another location of MRPC. We also enjoyed the window painting that we decided they painted in honor of my daughter. :)

We had one dinner at the Montana Ale Works. It was ok. Not our favorite though we did have some good meals. We tried the bison pot stickers, pretty good, a bison burger, some quesadillas and macaroni and cheese.

Anther night we ate at Burger Bob's. They had pretty good hamburgers with some good varieties.

Over all our favorite was MRPC.

Did You Know About Teens' Prescription Drug Abuse?

Did you know about teens' prescription drug abuse?

This month's Reader's Digest has an article calling attention to this growing epidemic. I usually find that by the time this type of thing is published, kids have been doing it for a long time. I know in our area it has been a problem. It's scary just how easy it seems to be for teens to get their hands on prescription drugs and just how easy it is to distribute and abuse them. And the pills are small and leave no smell. It is easy for kids to get hooked on them long before parents realize anything is going on. We need to stay aware and have open conversations with our kids about such "fads"....before we end up needing drug rehab treatment centers.

Did You Know You Should Wear a Helmet Skiing?

Did you know you should wear a helmet skiing?

Well, we certainly learned this the hard way last week. On our first day out skiing, our daughter had an incident. She is still not sure exactly what happened, but we do know that she hit the ground hard. And she was not wearing a helmet. She suffered a slight concussion and neck strain. She is sore but on the mend. From then and on any future ski trips we will be wearing helmets!

Did You Know Some of the Best Parenting Advice I Ever Got?

Did you know some of the best parenting advice I ever got?

Since I've started babysitting, I've been reading a few things related to babies again. I read just the other day that you should not "try to make a happy baby happier." When the article explained this means to let happy babies remain content with what they are doing (don't try to make them happier by moving them, giving them something else, etc) it reminded me of some of the best parenting advice I ever got. When our kids were younger, my brother-in-law said it so straight forward "When they are being good, don't mess with them!"

Did You Know About the Ladies' Bike Ride?

Did you know about the ladies' bike ride?

This Saturday, Dec. 11,  Bike Barn Houston is sponsoring a Ladies Day Bike Ride. The ride begins at 8am from Terry Hershey Park, Hwy 6 entrance. There are ride distances for all abilities and no one is going to be left behind. This sounds like the perfect ride for beginners to get acquainted with group riding and to learn some good info too. And, the weather should be warmer this weekend too!

Did You Know I Am Nearly Finished Making My List and Checking it Twice?

Did you know I am almost finished making my list and checking it twice?

Yep, I'm almost done with all my gift buying. We had Christmas early with my in-laws, so that helped me get done with theirs early. My husband is supposed to be picking one gift up for me today. Nothing big or fancy. And I told my son to make sure and not get anything big or fancy for his girlfriend of one year (hopefully no jewelry, not even cubic zirconia rings!) Don't want anything that serious yet!! But seriously, I do like having all my gifts bought. And sometimes, it's the little gifts that are most appreciated.

Did You Know You Could Ski for Free?

Did you know you could ski for free?

I saw today that at Bridger Bowl ski area in Bozeman, MT, skiers of intermediate to advanced ability are needed for a ski research study.

"VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR A SKI RESEARCH STUDY AT BRIDGER BOWL CONDUCTED BY THE MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY DEPARTMENT."

If you are interested, check out their website to see if you qualify! Locals can also volunteer to earn free skiing throughout the year.

Did You Know You Can Make Your Own Transcript?

Did you know you can make your own transcript?

Since my son is homeschooling for his last year of high school, I need to come up with an official transcript for him. I was pretty intimidated by this since we have not had to deal with this over the last few years. But I have found in simple internet searches that there are several programs available to help build a high school transcript. I have found one that I think will look good, is easy to use and even offers a free basic plan. I like how you just plug the info into the template and it prints it all up for you in an official document. Hopefully this one will be just right for what we need.

Did You Know Antibiotics are Over the Counter in Mexico?

Did you know antibiotics are "over the counter" in Mexico?

My son was on a trip with his girlfriend's family in Mexico last weekend. He got sick and ended up needing some antibiotics. His friend's aunt bought him some. When he got home and I talked to our doctor about it, she said that the antibiotics are available over the counter in Mexico.

I am not sure what else is available over the counter south of the border. I have heard of people crossing over for surgeries and medications. Luckily, every day problems can be taken care of here with simple routines like md clear.

Whether you suffer from minor illness or simple skin problems, it is nice to know when and where you can get easy access to the products you need.

Did You Know Irregular Heartbeats are Not Uncommon in Teens?

Did you know irregular heartbeats are not uncommon in teens?

When my daughter had her physical this summer, we were told she had an irregular heartbeat. As it improved with just a bit of exertion, she was cleared for all physical activity. More recently however, the school nurse said that they needed record of my daughter's clearance and that she needed an EKG result on file. We did find a pediatric cardiologist (thanks to our PA) who only charges $48 for the EKG without consultation. The results were faxed to our PA who just cleared my daughter. Although the heartbeat is irregular, the cardiologist was "underwhelmed" with the readout, saying this is not uncommon for teens during years of growth.

Did You Know Our Thanksgiving Menu?

Did you know our Thanksgiving menu?

When we are home as a family on Thanksgiving, we usually opt for a more non-traditional Thanksgiving meal. I asked everyone here what they wanted today and we went with chicken spaghetti, green beans, salad and cheesey garlic biscuits. Add to that homemade pumpkin pie, Japanese fruit pie (pecan pie with a fruity twist), and homemade chocolate pudding and whipped cream. DELICIOUS! I know after eating all those treats I am going to have to find out if Lipofuze or something really does melt fat!

Did You Know One of the Worst Times for Your Dishwasher to Break?

Did you know one of the worst times for your dishwasher to break?

Right now! With the last two pies in the oven and lots of dishes left to wash from pies, pudding, whipped cream, soups, etc, etc, etc on the night before Thanksgiving Day!!! AAAGGGHHH! Of course I know how to wash by hand, but there are just so many to do tonight!!!

Did You Know About The Newest Video Game Craze?

Did you know about the newest video game craze?

Every time something new and exciting comes out that is all everybody talks about at school. Right now the craze is Black Ops, a new video game. It’s all everybody talks about. Guys are hooked to their xbox trying to win this new game and then coming to school and bragging about how good they are to all their friends. It sure is funny how guys can get so competitive over a video game!

Did You Know How to Fix the Yahoo Spam Mail "Empty" Button?

Did you know how to fix the Yahoo Spam Mail "Empty" Button?

My Yahoo Spam Mail "empty" button was not working for several days. I did not know what to do about that and it was getting irritating having to delete each spam mail by clicking each box. So I finally decided to just log out of Yahoo. When I did log back in, the button worked again!

Did You Know It Doesn't Always Pay to Expedite?

Did you know it doesn't always pay to expedite?

I recently ordered three books from Half.com. The first book my son just found out he needed in a class, so I paid a few extra dollars to expedite the shipping. A few days later I ordered two more books for next semester's classes. I did not expedite these two books. I have since received both of the latter books, one being received only three days after ordering. I have yet to receive the book I paid to have expedited, though I did get word that it is being shipped out!

Did You Know About Holiday Eating?

Did you know about holiday eating?

It seems at this time of year, everyone is concerned about how to get through the holidays without doing too much damage to their waistline (I guess that is why there are so many New Year's resolutions about weight loss and why January is the time everyone is looking to find out  what is three best diet pill on the market.) I have been reading some ideas from a certain women's health magazine about holiday eating. It seems to me to be common sense. Eat right most of the time, set limits and enjoy when you do choose to indulge. Also working in exercise as much as possible and keeping routines seems to help in the battle with holiday eating.

Did You Know About Trooper School?

Did you know about Trooper School?

When I asked my friend where her four year old twins are going to school, she told me the local high school! They have a program there called "Trooper School" where junior and senior level high school students who are learning to be teachers actually teach a pre-school three days a week. I am sure the students' teachers are in there with them, but this seems to be a win-win situation for everyone involved. Parents save a little money as the school costs about half of what a regular pre-school costs. The high school students get lots of hands-on training (the days they don't teach they are preparing lessons), and of course the pre-schoolers love the teens! There is a very long waiting list for Trooper School. It seems like a good thing for the whole community.

Did You Know The Best Gifts for In Laws?

Did you know the best gifts for in laws?

For some reason it seems to be harder for many people to buy gifts for their in laws than for those of their family of origin. Maybe it's the way we relate, or the background we have together, or just the fact that we like similar things. I know this year, I found what I thought would be perfect mother in law gifts for birthday or Christmas. When I showed it to my daughter, she told me that she already had one!! Well, I knew it would have been just right!

Did You Know You Can Cook Hot Dogs on the Go?

Did you know you can cook hot dogs on the go?

I found a great little video showing how to cook hot dogs on the go. This seems perfect for picnics, day trips or even when traveling over the holidays. It provides a change of pace from PB&J.

Simply put hot dogs into a thermos. Boil some water and add to thermos. Close and go. When you are ready for your dogs, they will be "hot" dogs!

Did You Know the Number One Month for Gym Membership?

Did you know the number one month for gym membership?  The number one month for gym membership signups and renewals is January, because everyone is trying to fulfill their new year's resolution, and they have most likely gained weight over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Well, if you start learning how to get rid of belly fat now, you can have a head start on the holidays.  That way, when the new year rolls around, you won't have to be looking forward to the same old resolution as always, because you have already lost the weight beforehand.

Did You Know How to Tell if the Ref is Calling an Offensive Foul?

Did you know how to tell if the Ref is calling an offensive foul?

As many basketball games as I've played and watched, I just learned something new. I knew that if the Ref put his/her hand behind the head, that an offensive foul was being called. But I did not realize another way to tell is if the Ref has his/her fist closed.

Did you know that not many people have actual health care plans?

Did you know that not many people have actual health care plans?

Since the start of the new presidency, medicare and national healthcare has been a hot topic of discussion.  It seems like everyone has their own opinion on the matter, but no matter what you think, the bottom line is that you need a plan.  The good news is that you don't have to be the one to come up with it.  If you need ideas for good medicare supplement plans you are in luck.  Allsup can help with anything you need, including disability planning.  It's always smart to have a plan.

Did You Know Alternative Ways to Pay Kids?

Did you know alternative ways to pay kids?

When my kids do some jobs around the house for pay, I don't always have the cash to give them. So, I have found some alternative ways to pay them. They are just as happy as they still get what they want. For example, I have paid my daughter in iTunes purchases. I have also bought the item for them that they were earning the money for. Or my son is always happy to be paid in a tank of gas.

Did You Know That It's Almost Christmas?

Did you know that it's almost Christmas?

Christmas is such a fun time of year. Everybody is always happy and joyful around Christmas time. But Christmas is also a very hectic time of year. There's so much you have to think about: getting the tree out of the attic, putting up colored lights around the house, and, of course, buying presents for just about EVERYBODY! When searching for the perfect present, the first thing the buyer looks at is the price. That's why people always try to buy things on sale. And don't you love it when there are some really nice, normally expensive items on sale for a great price? Like necklaces, bracelets, rings, and other nice jewelry. Those are usually the best gifts for girls. Nice and pretty for the person receiving the present, and great costs for the buyer! Thank goodness for sales!

Did You Know About the Red Cross Ramble?

Did you know about the Red Cross Ramble?

This was another long distance cycling event benefitting the Red Cross. There were four routes of varying distances offered: 25 miles, 46, 77 and 100. My friend and I did the 77 mile route. This time while we did stop for snacks, restrooms and stretching, we did not take pictures and hang out too long. We even skipped a couple of the stops. We shaved two hours and ten minutes off our time from our previous ride!

The route was nice, the weather was great and the whole event was well supported. Maybe next year I'll be up to riding the 100 miles with my husband!

Did You Know My Favorite Sport to Watch on TV?

Did you know my favorite sport to watch on tv?

I think I decided tonight what my favorite sport to watch on tv is. I was raised watching baseball and playing softball, and I've always enjoyed watching it on tv and in the stadium. But tonight, when the World Series, a local pro basketball team and college football were all on at the same time, I realized why baseball is my favorite to watch...no cheerleaders!

Did You Know That It's Almost Winter?

Did you know that it's almost winter?

Winter's coming up quickly! I love winter, but it can be a bad thing sometimes. The chilly weather always turns the water in your hot tub cold. What's the point of having a hot tub if it's full of cold water? But there's a solution! You can use hot tub covers and the cold weather won't affect the water in your hot tub. You will still be able to relax in peace in nice warm water. Thank goodness!

Did you know you can get your SAT scores online?

While waiting for the official results from SAT tests to come in the mail, students can also access their scores at the College Board SAT website. Did You Know Why People Use HGH Supplements?

Did you know why people use HGH supplements?

According to http://www.besthghsupplements.net, people are using HGH supplements for two main reasons. One is to enhance athletic performance and the other is to stay young looking. While Human Growth Hormone is a substance naturally made in the body, it slows down production by around age 30. So many people feel the need to supplement the hormone by injecting or taking supplements. This is a very touchy subject, one that needs to be considered from many angles before ever starting such a program.

Did You Know One of the Best Gifts You Can Give Your Busy Wife?

Did you know one of the best gifts you can give your busy wife?

I helped in my son's co-op all day today and my husband came home early. When I got home, I found he had vacuumed the house and cleaned most of our bathroom! That was a wonderful gift!

Now if he can just learn to cook dinner too! ;)

Did You Know About HGH?

Did you know about HGH?

It seems that people are turning to HGH (human growth hormone) to reverse the signs of aging.  After the age of thirty, the production of HGH slows and the first signs of aging begin to show. Even though people have used both HGH injections and hgh supplements, there are risks concerned with its usage. Be sure to talk to your doctor and do your homework before embarking on anti-aging treatments associated with hgh.

Did You Know You Can Paste and Match Font Styles?

Did you know you can paste and match font styles?

Sometimes when I am inserting paid links, the anchor text does not match my blog style. I did find that if I click on the "edit" button there is a choice that says "paste and match style". Using that allows my pasted text to match the default text in my blog posts.

Did you know there are some people who have to go on diets to gain weight?

Did you know there are some people who have to go on diets to gain weight?

For example, my friend was told by her doctor that she needs to gain weight. The doctor gave her certain weight gain supplements to try. My friend has been very skinny her whole life and it can cause some serious problems, like injuring her ankles and wrists and getting sick easily. That is why weight gaining supplements can be very useful to some people.

Did You Know Target Will Only Accept Sixty Dollars Worth of Returns Without Receipts?

Did you know Target will only accept $60 worth of returns without receipts?

I was not aware of that before. But I was told yesterday by a friend who just had a baby. She got triplicates of three different items (and no she didn't have triplets!) which were things that she only needed one of. So she returned the items only to find she had reached her limit of $60. I know now why it is so important to include those gift receipts on shower gifts!

Did You Know It Hasn't Rained in a Month?

Did you know it hasn't rained in a month?

At least some of the guys on the radio said there had been no traceable amount of rain over the last month. I can't remember if that is exactly true, but it has been a while. I guess when the time comes for wearing women's rain bootsas the old saying goes, "when it rains, it pours", I'd like to be ready!

Did You Know It's Harder to Jog Pushing a Stroller?

Did you know it's harder to jog pushing a stroller?

It's been a while since I've pushed a stroller. Since I've started babysitting this week, I decided to work in a walk or two with the baby in the stroller. I am also trying to up my jog intervals this week, up to a minute and a half at a time. And I can certainly feel the difference when pushing the stroller. It can only surely help to make me stronger. And I like taking the baby for a walk so I think it works out well.

Did You Know I Finished Day One of the Bike Around the Bay?

Did you know I finished day one of the Bike Around the Bay?

As seen in my previous post, I was able to do the first day of this fun cycling event. It was lovely weather and a great day all around. I was glad to have a friend to do it with, it would be much tougher to do alone. We took our time, stopped at every break point for bathrooms, snacks and stretching. I think my favorite part of the ride was the strip along Bolivar Peninsula. I did not realize how long it was! I had a lot of fun and have a feeling of accomplishment in riding the 78 miles of the first days' course!

Did You Know About Bike Around the Bay?

Did you know about Bike Around the Bay?

I had been thinking of doing this long distance cycling event ever since I heard about it. But knowing that I could only do one day of it, I decided against it. I found out earlier this week that a friend of mine who had already registered had decided to drop the second day and only ride the first day of the event. So I decided to take another look at the event. I found out today that they are accepting riders on the day of the event. So I sent an email asking if there would be a prorated price for one day riders. He told me that he would give me the original early registration fee. So...I am in! Tomorrow I am going to do the first day of the Bike Around the Bay Tour-77.8 miles!

Did You Know Beans Can Ferment If Soaked Too Long?

Did you know beans can ferment if soaked too long?

I had a bag of beans that I split in half for different recipes. I cooked one but did not have time to get to the other that same day, so I just changed the water and let the beans soak another night. They smelled "funny" when I rinsed them and got ready to cook them. As they cooked my son stated that "whatever is in the kitchen smells bad!" I agreed. After a short search online, I learned that beans can ferment if left to soak too long. I think these sure did.

Did You Know About 365 Days of gratefulness?

Did you know about 365 days of gratefulness?

Last week at church there was a challenge put forth to come up with a list of things we are thankful for over the next 365 days. That is one year of finding one thing a day for which to be grateful. Shouldn't be too hard right? Well, I do wish I still had the mind of a three year old ("thank you for the flowers, and the pretty colors, and the windows, and the mailbox, and the sky, and the dog, and the marbles, and the...) Just one a day....why can that be so hard sometimes...?

Did You Know I Had to Get an Insurance Quote?

Did you know I had to get an insurance quote?

Or at least I thought I did. After a minor incident involving someone in the neighborhood (well, it was their relative anyway) I called to find an insurance quote, wondering if my rate would go up. Thankfully, the rate won't go up. I just hate it when stuff like this happens.

Did You Know I Got Four Pair of Shoes for Ten Dollars?

Did you know I got four pair of shoes for ten dollars?

Well, they are all for my daughter. We hit Payless today, and they had their sandals on clearance for $3 each and it was the last day of the buy-one-get-one-half-off-sale! She went to the register with three pair, but at that rate, I told her to get the fourth (I can be so generous like that!) They are cute shoes and I was happy for her to get something "decent" looking. Not a bad deal for either one of us!

Did You Know About Field Trips for Teens?

Did you know about field trips for teens?

My son's marine biology class went to the beach today. Even though it was windy and the water temp was about 80 degrees, it turned out to be a nice afternoon. A local naturalist came to meet us and help the kids identify organisms that they found. There was lots of digging, seining, shell collecting, and even shivering! While my son said this was not as good as the physics field trip (Schlitterbahn water park!) he said it was still pretty good.

Did You Know What I Do When I Can't Sleep?

Did you know what I do when I can't sleep?

I couldn't sleep again last night. So after laying awake for awhile, and to get my mind to shut off and quit thinking, I turned the tv on. Of course there is not much to watch late at night/early in the morning. There are tons of make up, hair care, fat burner reviews, weight loss plans, and money making paid programming on. That's really about all there is to watch. At least it does help with the falling asleep!

Did You Know About Run Training?

Did you know about run training?

One of the things I learned about running this week has been interesting and helpful in my recovery after surgery. I learned that not only does it take time after surgery to get the scar tissue worked out, but that it takes about three months of short run times to build up the connective tissues. This means that even though your cardiovascular and muscular fitness may have reached a level of being pushed further, you can still move too quickly and (re)injure yourself if you don’t take the time necessary to allow the connective tissue to strengthen. This has helped me feel less disappointed and to focus on getting stronger and taking it easy now so that in the long run my whole body will be able to handle the longer runs (that’s the idea anyway!!)

Did You Know About Consumer Math?

Did you know about consumer math?

This is one of the subjects I am teaching to my son. I think high school senior year is the perfect time for this and I think it should be a required subject. Much of it he has at least heard of, but I think it's important to share the information with him. Some of it he is already using, other info he won't use for years to come. But at least he will have heard it and maybe won't have to learn his financial future in such a hard way as some kids do. I really like the practical approach and try to implement what he is learning in this subject to everyday living.

Did You Know My Favorite Gifts for New Babies?

Did you know my favorite gifts for new babies?

Anytime I receive new birth announcements I like to give each new baby the same gift. I even try to stock up and keep some on hand so I am ready for the new little ones. I nearly always give a baby Bible. One with colorful pages and short stories. When possible, I also like to give Christmas ornaments, particularly the "My First Christmas" ones. I will buy these, without a year stamped on them, and save them to give along with the Bible as a shower or new birth gift.

Did You Know About Amazon's Gadgets for Blogger?

Did you know about Amazon's Gadgets for Blogger?

I noticed the other day that Amazon now has gadgets for Blogger. They are really easy to install. If you are an Amazon associate, then all the work is done for you. All you have to do is copy and paste. If you want to utilize some of these gadgets for yourself, just go to the Amazon associate page to see what all you can install on your blog. You can use the search box to highlight relevant items. There are also some sidebar gadgets you can install. They have made it easy!

Did You Know You Can Make Your Own Sushi?

Did you know you can make your own sushi?

I was trying to think of some healthy, nutritious meals. Even ones that could be easily transported. It hit me that we would probably like what I learned is called "California Rolls". It's kind of an American sushi with rice, shrimp and avocado. It is delicious and not that hard to make. You can find recipes online. There are also some videos online to help you learn how to fold the rolls properly. Now if I can just keep myself eating these light healthy meals, maybe I wouldn't be in such need of the best slimming pills!

Did You Know My Son is Now a Campus Rep?

Did you know my son is now a campus rep?

I posted a few weeks ago about the collegebookrenter.com website. After our first encounter with them, in which we had no problem getting the books we ordered, I told my son about the opportunity to become a campus representative for them. I did not know if he would qualify since he is still in high school. But he went ahead and applied. He got a phone interview soon after that and is now a campus rep for the book renters (you can also buy through them and save some money on the book prices.) To me, renting these books that are not going to be used long term, and as often as new editions come out, makes great sense. So if you are going to be needing textbooks feel free to enter my son's rep code if you decide to rent or purchase from this website.

college book renters campus rep code: CBR321000

Several years ago I broke some ribs. Apparently I had bronchitis and didn't know it. The amount of coughing I did somehow cracked or broke my ribs. (They either broke directly from the coughing or cracked and then broke from the activity I was doing.) Not long after that I also broke a toe. From doing nothing except maybe running. My doctor said I was too young for this and recommended that I start and stay on a regular calcium supplement. I have to take a minimum of 1500 mg each day. Some days I do better than others at remembering. I especially like the calcium chews (the ones without artificial flavors and such.) These are almost like a treat after dinner!

Did You Know About the Race for the Cure?

Did you know about the Race for the Cure?

This is the fun run/walk sponsored by the Susan Komen foundation. It is to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and education locally. Some of the funds will be used to help those in need of breast cancer care as well. Because my mom is now breast cancer survivor, we are going to join the Race for the Cure in Houston on Oct. 2 to celebrate her health.

Did You Know Hunting Seasons Start on Different Dates?

Did you know hunting seasons start on different dates?

It seems throughout our state, there is nearly always a season to hunt something! Whether you use rifles and scopes or bows and arrows, there is usually something in season. I read that there is no closed season on rabbits. And there are even seasons to hunt pronghorn antelope (I didn't know there were any around!), javelina, squirrels and alligators!

Did You Know Some of the Best Fat Burners?

Did you know some of the best fat burners?

As the weather cools down, it's easier to get out and exercise without dying of heat exhaustion! Some of my favorites are outdoor activities. I am trying to get back to my running, though right now it is mostly walking. I have learned to enjoy swimming. And I have enjoyed cycling since I was a teenager. These are my ideas of some of the best fat burners.

Did You Know About Crave Cupcakes?

Did you know about Crave Cupcakes?

I heard about this sweet bake shop a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to take my husband there for his birthday treat, but we actually ran out of time. At Crave you can get freshly baked cupcakes and muffins. They are baked in batches throughout the day to make sure they are served as fresh as possible. No trans fats are used. Flavors are rotated each day to keep some variety. And they look delicious!

Did You Know About Our New TV?

Did you know about our new TV?

Well, we did it. We succumbed and bought a new flat screen TV. It's nice. The picture and color are good. The shows now have the "soap opera" look. Things look more "realistic" rather than set on a stage or scene. I have noticed too the actors' skin. I know that's weird, but with such a large clear picture, well, I noticed. I know they all have on some make up but every one of them, no matter age or gender, look like they have no need of facial creams or acne treatment products-or at least they have used some of the best. And of course have good make up artists. But all in all, we have enjoyed the new TV and its crystal clear picture.

Did You Know Shaving Cream on your Hands can Prevent Grease?

Did you know using shaving cream on your hands can prevent grease?

I have not tried it, but I did tell that to my husband. He keeps "goop" in the garage to clean up after dirty projects. So when I heard that rubbing your hands with shaving cream before a job is supposed to help prevent the grease build up, I had to pass it on. I wonder if it works after the job as a degreaser? And I wonder if applying it before doesn't make your hands too slippery to work? It's worth a try….

Did You Know About Flavored Cigars?

Did you know about flavored cigars?

One of my grandfathers smoked cigars. The smell is strong and very distinctive. Even though he did not smoke them constantly in front of us, now when I smell a cigar I associate it with him. When I heard about Black and Mild flavored cigars (apple, grape) I wondered if the smell is as unique as each flavor. If so, I can imagine those smells would be singularly associated with those who smoke them.

Did You Know About Swimplan.com?

Did you know about swimplan.com?

I learned last week about this site where you can get free swim workouts. You can get them customized to your level. When you first sign up, you will be under the Premium account. This will expire in fourteen days, but you can still log in for the free workouts after that. I am hoping this will be a great place to find some variety in my workouts.

Did You Know About Document Binding Machines?

Did you know about document binding machines?

This summer my mom was making some bound books for the kids in her bible classes. The church had an old document binding machine, which did not seem to be working well. I wish we had known about the VeloBind machine then. She ended up having to take the booklets to a copy place to have them bound. Next time we'll know where to get an updated document binding machine.

Did You Know How to Shower When there are No Showers?

Did you know how to shower when there are no showers?

Today I did a sprint triathlon relay. It is the first time I've done one on a Sunday. As I wanted to leave straight from the event and go to church, I knew I needed to find a shower. There were no gyms around. There was a public beach area with showers, but it was about fifteen miles in the opposite direction. So I decided to do the next best thing.

I had several bottles of plain water, so I used these as my faucets. I washed my hair right there in front of my car. (It was in a small parking area with a little curb area right in front.) I knew my kids would be so embarrassed if they saw me! That is when I noticed someone sitting in the car right next to me!

Then I had to find somewhere to "shower" and change clothes. I did find a park restroom right there in the park, so I went in and proceeded to "shower". I went in the handicap stall and used a foaming wipe to soap up. Then I poured the water over to rinse. It was cold, but it worked.

Did You Know About 24 Hour Fitness Varsity Program?

Did you know about 24 hour fitness varsity program?

We have been contemplating dropping our YMCA membership for two years. The fee has gone up, but it is a good place for the whole family and is very convenient. We however have not dropped our 24 Hour Fitness membership. We pay for the whole year what we pay per month at the Y (this is because we have been members so long and got a special deal years ago.) So when my son decided to play homeschool basketball again this year, he reminded us that 24 Hour has a "varsity program" where members of varsity level high school teams can come to the club for free. This sounded like the perfect plan-drop the Y and let our son use 24 Hour. Except when I checked on the program, the high school players can only use the facilities from 2:30-4:30 pm! This is fine if they all got to the gym at that time, but those kids usually have activities/practices after school and those hours are not usually the hours they can utilize the program! I know they would really like to use it in the evening/at night, which is the gym's most crowded times. So, we still have not dropped the Y…..

Did You Know You Cannot Enter Minute Maid Park During the National Anthem?

Did you know you cannot enter Minute Maid Park during the National Anthem?

Last week my mom, sister, a friend and I all were given tickets by my father to an Astros game. We almost never have a "ladies night" out! We had a good time. But on our way there, we took a wrong exit and ended up arriving a few minutes late. Which worked out good for parking-we parked in a very close parking lot for only $5! But we got to the stadium as the National Anthem was being played. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the entrances were blocked and all processing of the line stopped during the song.

Did You Know Anyone Who Wants a Dog?

Did you know anyone who wants a dog?

We have been trying to find a home for Charlie. He is a friendly loving stray who needs a friendly loving home. He still exhibits some puppy behavior but is a good dog. He has been staying indoors in a foster home. He doesn't bark and goes outside to relieve himself. If you know anyone who is looking for a nice dog, let me know ASAP as Charlie has until Thursday until he will be moved into a shelter.

Did You Know About North Carolina's Outer Banks?

Did you know about North Carolina's Outer Banks?

Just off the coast of North Carolina lie the state's barrier islands. The unique lifestyle of the barrier islands makes for the perfect vacation get away. While looking at all the exciting things to do during an outer banks vacation (and there are many things to do!) I came across Carolina Designs Outer Banks vacation rentals. WOW!

Just looking at the rental house photos made me itching to make this a vacation destination! This resort would be the ideal home base while vacationing on the outer banks. The house has lots of space for a family stay; there are two king beds, two twins, a queen bed and bunk beds. There is on site volleyball, a private pool, a pool table and dvds for those quiet nights in. Being located in a peaceful ocean neighborhood makes it sound like the superb vacation sanctuary.

So in between playing on the beach, jet skiing, parasailing, even hang gliding, visiting the First Flight Museum and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, golfing, hiking, cycling, and seeing the lighthouses, this seaside rental home would make a Utopian retreat in any season.

Did You Know You Can Rent College Textbooks?

Did you know you can rent college textbooks?

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to just rent a book for a semester and sure enough, there are several sites available that do just that! I found a site that has my son's books for rent and/or sale cheaper than I expected. There are rentals available from 30-130 days at reasonable rates. I also found that to buy the book was half what it would have cost us locally. Since he will likely need the book for two semesters, I chose to purchase the book, which was only $9 more than renting it for the semester. His other book we rented for $10 for the semester.

When renting, you are allowed minimal highlighting while using the book to study. And the shipping is free as is the return shipping. They are also looking for students to be campus representatives. These kids can then earn certificates for future book rentals/purchases as well as bonuses.

Did You Know Both My Kids Need Teeth Pulled?

Did you know both my kids need teeth pulled?

We had not been to the dentist in a year. I knew it was almost time for my son to get his wisdom teeth, though the dentist had told us last year it was too early. When we made our trek to the dentist, my daughter still had a baby tooth that was hanging on by a thread. She said it's been that way for nearly a year. She could never get it pulled and the other tooth was already fully grown in. The dentist had to pull it out, though that baby tooth did not want to come out-he had to use a tool to get it out.

Then we found out my son does have a wisdom tooth already in and it would be easier/cheaper to go ahead and pull it out now. While the dentist today said it would only take him four seconds to do it and that it would be quick and easy, they reminded him that a root canal was waiting on him and that we would have to come back to have it done!

Did You Know How To Strike Words in a Blog Post?

Did you know how to strike words in a blog post?

Some platforms have a button that allows you to just click on it to strike out words, but I have not found that on this blog. And when I read one of my favorite bloggers, she has a way of striking out certain words, adding just the right touch of humor to her blog. I have wondered how to do that, so I finally "googled" it. As usual, it's a simple code. Just type < strike > the words you want struck out < / strike > (do not leave spaces between the brackets/characters, leaving you with something like this: strike

Did You Know a Girl's Best Friend?

Did you know a girl's best friend?

I am sure you all have heard the saying that "diamonds are a girl's best friend." I am not so sure. When I asked my fourteen year old daughter about diamonds, she said "They are not a girl's best friend. Chocolate is!" Now I know plenty of women who would say that they prefer the diamonds, but I am sure that chocolate is a close runner up!

Did You Know A Perfect Practical Joke for Your Big Brother?

Did you know a perfect practical joke for your big brother?

Earlier this year, my kids were involved in an all out sibling prank rivalry! It was hilarious listening to them plan and carry out the pranks on each other. They did things like take all the light bulbs out of a room, or set an alarm clock for midnight under a bed….so, when my son was traveling this summer, my daughter knew she had to give him the perfect welcome home! She decided that instead of having her brother "Punk'd" she would have him "Pink'd"!

She gathered all the pink items she could (which meant she had to borrow from friends since she is not a "pink" girl herself!) She used pink sheets and blankets over his bed and couch. She set up a pink table, complete with pink accessories. She had pink stuffed animals everywhere. She covered his desktop with pink wrapping paper. She had a pink robe and slippers. Then she had pink streamers and balloons hung from the ceiling. Pink balloons were also scattered all over the floor.

She then made a banner for his door that said "You just got Punk'd Pink'd"!

When she assured him that she didn't mess with anything, he replied "except my masculinity!"

It was the perfect welcome home! :)

Did You Know You Can Cook Out Inside?

Did you know you can cook out inside?

Of course I am referring to using an electric grill to bring "cooking out" indoors. I love these little contraptions! It's nice to be able to quickly and conveniently be able to grill things indoors. It's perfect when you have just a couple of things you want to grill. I know that our public school concession stand even uses one to cook their hot dogs!

Did You Know About Dual Credit?

Did you know about dual credit?

High schoolers these days have the option of taking dual credit classes. This applies to students in any setting, including public high school, private school or homeschool. Most community colleges allow students to take a course provided by their campus which allows the student to obtain both high school and college credit for that course. Most public and private schools that offer this have an agreement set up with a certain college and you can get information from the student's guidance counselor.

For homeschooled students, you can contact the guidance counselors at the college to help you with getting the information and enrolling your student in the dual credit courses. There are often guidelines (for any type of student) including how many hours they can take, which courses can be taken, and even financial options. These are great options for older students to get ahead in some college hours and even allows the family to save some money in the long run since community college hours usually cost less than larger schools.

Did You Know How to Fix Leaky Faucets?

Did you know how to fix leaky faucets?

Since leaky faucets can actually cost you a lot of money over a period of time, it's always wise to repair them as quickly as possible. While I don't know how to do it, there are many guides online on how to repair different types of faucets. I didn't even realize there were so many types of faucets out there with different repair guides! And sometimes, you end up just having to replace them!

Did You Know It's Easy to Withdraw a Student from Public School?

Did you know it's easy to withdraw a student from public school?

I have never withdrawn a child from public school, but this year my son has decided to homeschool again to finish up his high school years. (He says high school is over-rated!) I was anxious about how to withdraw him and how I was going to get his transcript. It actually turned out to be no problem at all. I had printed out a letter of withdrawal/intent to homeschool letter just in case (this is what all homeschool sites say to do), but I did not need it. The school had a short form to fill out and they checked that he will be homeschooled. Then I signed it and they printed out his official transcript right there. All done within fifteen minutes!

Did You Know About Cell Phone Spies?

Did you know about cell phone spies?

I had not really heard about this and wondered just what a cell phone spy is. Well, it is a way to retrieve deleted phone books and text messages. I can see how this would be a big temptation for parent's of teens! The device could also be used as a back up for your phone information. And if you're like me and delete something you didn't mean to, then you would be able to restore it!

Did You Know About Mat Pilates?

Did you know about mat pilates?

I have tried pilates with the machine before, and really liked it. But I have gone to two mat pilates classes in the last couple of weeks. I really like these! What a total body workout! And since I am not fully released for all exercises, the teachers have been great to modify movements for me so that I can still get a workout even if I can't do a particular move. I sure am weak, particularly in the legs, but I am glad to be able to find some exercises I can do for them in modification.

Did You Know About Comparing Your Writing Style?

Did you know about comparing your writing style?

I found a site that compares your writing style to famous authors. When I first submitted posts from this blog, I was told that I write like Bram Stoker. I saved the badge in a word document, but somehow cannot access it now. So with today's submissions I was told I write like Raymond Chandler, Margaret Atwood and Stephen King. Because Stephen King came up with another blog's submission, I will post it here. Between him and Bram Stoker, I guess my blogs are a bit scary!

Did You Know About Our Old TV?

Did you know about our old tv?

We have chosen to still fight our old tv. This is only the second television we've had in 23 years! When we turn it on, we have to bang on it just right for the picture to come in. After a little while, when it's warmed up, it works fine. When we leave, we have gotten into the habit of leaving it on, just so we don't have to fight it when we come back! I know, in this day and age of new state of the art Samsung HDTVs, we are still fighting our old television….!

Did You Know the Best Oven Cleaner?

Did you know the best oven cleaner?

Last weekend I finally gave my oven a deep cleaning. It was in great need, as I had burnt on some stuff and then some foil I had used to broil on caught fire and left the whole oven a black mess. I started with some baking soda and vinegar. This worked ok, especially on the stuff that was not caked on. But before I finished I really wanted to get the oven clean. I decided to try some pot cleaner I have left from my Saladmaster pots and pans. This stuff worked amazingly! It got the entire oven clean, included the baked on grease! That oven has never been so clean since we moved in here!

Did You Know About Great Give-Aways?

Did you know great give-aways?

When we go to any kind of carnival or community event, I love collecting those free little promotional items. And it's great for the companies involved too. It is a cheap way for them to get some advertisement (and it seems like a good deal for the amount they get.) Even if they give away lots of these items, their name is in everyone's hands. It seems like a win-win situation for the consumer and the companies too.

Did You Know to Put Your Goggles Under Your Swim Cap?

Did you know to put your goggles under your swim cap?

My friend told me this and I had read that a lot of triathletes prefer this. They say it keeps the goggles in place and if you get kicked then the goggles will be less likely to come off if they are under your swim cap. I tried it the other day, in the pool. I found that with the goggles under my cap, I had less (no) leaking and that they stayed in place. I was also able to keep them looser, which was much more comfortable. I will be trying this method again to see how it works consistently.

Did You Know a Healthy Hamburger Recipe?

Did you know a healthy hamburger recipe?

I found this delicious sounding hamburger recipe yesterday. I have not tried it but it sounds so delicious and nutritious!

1 pound hamburger
1 egg
1/2 cup oatmeal
chopped spinach
2 T grated cheese

Mix ingredients and make into four patties. Cook 6-8 minutes on each side. Serve on whole wheat buns. YUM!

Did You Know About the Catabolic Diet?

Did you know about the catabolic diet?

I have never tried it but my husband has. He was talking about it again last night. He really likes the plan and the way it makes him feel. The diet consists of foods that take more calories to digest than they put in. For example, eating a catabolic food may only provide 25 calories and yet take 100 calories to digest. This gives you a deficit in your stored fat deposit. My husband says he doesn't feel hungry while eating on this plan and it works better than any fat burner pills or even "starving" yourself!

Did You Know About Paperback Exchange?

Did you know about paperback exchange?

I have seen book shelves in our library marked "Paperback Exchange". I was really not sure what it meant exactly, except for the actual meaning of the words. And it does indeed mean just that. You can take what books you like and bring them back when you like. Or you can replace them with others in exchange for the ones you take. This is a pretty cool exchange the library has set up!

Did you know the Phantom of the Opera has a name?

If you read the book you will find that he does. I don't know if you would want to find that out here or not, so I'll not give it away in the post but will post it in the comments section. At first I found it rather amusing or simplistic that he would have a name. Then when I read the afterword I came to see why the author would give the phantom a name. So, if you are a fan, read the book!

Did You Know Houston is Getting an Ironman Race?

Did you know Houston is getting an ironman race?

It's official- Houston is getting an Ironman race! Registration started today (and likely filled up today) for Houston's first full length Ironman. It will be held Saturday (!) May 21, 2011, in the Woodlands. The race will be a 2.4 mile swim / 112 mile bike / 26.2 mile run. I am happy to hear that it is on a Saturday. I sure hope they keep it that way for the years to come. My husband has long wanted to do an Ironman and has looked for a Saturday race. He won't be ready by May, but maybe in another year or two...

Did You Know You Can Get Sore Knees from Workouts?

Did you know you can get sore knees from workouts?

Yesterday I began to have a very sore knee on the leg opposite from the one I've had surgery on. I thought it was due to overcompensating and having to bend down only using one leg (that leg). As I found out today, both my knees are sore. I really felt it when I got down to do my push ups again. I think that doing the knee push ups and the ab crawl from the other day (on a towel on a tile floor) really made my knees sore! I did not do them today!

Did You Know Some Exercises You Can Do During Recovery?

Did you know some exercises you can do during recovery?

Following my foot surgery, I have been limited in my activities. I have been wanting to do some sort of exercising just to keep from getting completely out of shape. I can only do upper body exercises. And since I have not been able to walk well, I have notgone to the gym either. But there are some things I have been doing at home.

I started by doing bicep curls with juice bottles. I also did some tricep exercises with cans of food. This week I have felt better and came up with a small routine. I have done tricep dips off the fireplace with my injured foot in the air. Then immediately into a "preacher curl" (bicep curl) seated in a chair. Doing sets of these back to back is a "super set" and gives you a better workout. Rest a minute or two before going into the next super set.

After this I do a behind the head tricep lift, resting between each set. Then do a bicep exercise twice through. Yesterday I was able to add some knee push ups! I have also been trying this shoulder circle workout, though with much less weight.

I have been doing abs throughout my recovery. You can do crunches in the bath tub or on an exercise ball. You can do leg lifts while seated in a chair. Yesterday, from the knee push up position I did an "ab crawl"!

Before doing any exercises during an injury/surgery recovery be sure to check with your doctor to see what is advisable. And get plenty of good food and rest!

Did You Know Why Flamingoes are Pink?

Did you know why flamingoes are pink?

I had often heard it is because they eat shrimp, which causes the flamingo's feathers to turn shrimpy-colored. This is partly true. I learned today that algae also causes the coloring of the feathers. The algae contains carotenoids which are found in carrots. Both of these mainstays of the flamingo diet are what causes the pinkish-orangish coloring of the mature flamingo's feathers.

Did You Know About Post Surgery?

Did you know about post surgery?

I sure did not! I had errands to do for church. I was even supposed to be a wedding co-oridinator this past weekend. I had no idea how "down" I would be. I guess I had it in my head that being in a boot meant I was going to be walking within a day or so. Um, NO. Even now, with a shoe on I am finding it hard to put all my weight down on my foot. I only have one stitch, but the foot is still bruised and swollen. And it's a little painful too. So, after surgery, don't make any real plans other than resting and therapy! That is what I am going to do for the next month!

Did You Know about Who Knew?

Did you know about Who Knew?

I found another fun website filled with some fun facts. It is sponsored by Yahoo. and you can watch videos with interesting tidbits. For example, did you know the first Friday in June is National Donut Day? Did you know where the donut originated? I also learned about some accidental inventions. Actually I already knew about them but it was fun to see them. In fact, the one about the discovery of penicillin is something my daughter just did a report on!

Did You Know What Programs Come on TV in the Early Morning?

Did you know what programs come on in the early morning?

I was very uncomfortable early this morning. After keeping my husband awake for an hour after having to get up, I had him just put me on the couch. So the early morning programs I saw on in the wee hours consisted of financial advice, dietary supplements, acne treatments and skin care like gettingridofblackheads.net, and other paid programming. Come to think of it, most of today's programs have been sports or paid programming.

Did You Know I Saw a Good Commercial Today?

Did you know I saw a good commercial today?

I was surprised to see a really good commercial today. It showed a basketball team of young players in a championship game. The Ref made an erroneous call. One of the young men told the coach what actually happened. His teammates were not happy about the kid fessing up. But the coach reinforced the player's decision and the commercial ends with the player approaching the Ref to tell what had actually happened. The commercial then said something about "good sportsmanship." I was glad to see something actually worthwhile on TV today!

Did You Know I Have Been Watching Lots of TV?

Did you knowI have been watching lots of tv?

That is all I've done the last two days, recouping from my surgery. I have seen lots of game shows and lots of commercials! I have started making a list of things advertised that I want to check into. Let's see, there is the enamel building mouth wash, a couple of different wrinkle creams, wart remover, and a brown spot fader. I will be glad when I am able to get up and around again!

Did You Know About One Stitch Heel Spur Removal?

Did you know about one stitch heel spur removal?

I am heading out to my heel spur removal surgery. I chose this method to avoid being on crutches for a month. I still have to be careful and I think the recovery time is still probably about the same. However, I will be back in tennis shoes by next week! I'll post here to tell how it goes….

Did You Know About Pre-Surgery Rules?

Did you know about pre-surgery rules?

I figured I would not be able to eat this morning before my foot surgery, but I was not thinking about not being able to have anything to drink. I had originally planned to get up and go to spin class early so I could get my last work out done before I can't do any for a while (I guess I better check out some diet supplement and apidexin reviews!) At any rate, needless to say, that was nixed by the doctor and surgery center in my pre-op instructions. So I am sitting here thirsty and ready to head out to surgery. And yes, I obeyed my pre-op instructions!

Did You Know You Can Use Shortening in Place of Butter?

Did you know you can use shortening in place of butter?

I have looked this up recently and have found that you can replace butter with shortening for baking items like cakes and cookies. You can make the replacement in equal amounts. I have used this both in cookies and cake with good results. However, if the butter is important to the flavor of the item, for example if you are making butter frosting, then using shortening will not be a good idea.

Did You Know The Best Treatment for Acne?

Did you know the best treatment for acne?

Living with teens, this is a topic of concern. And since there are literally thousands of products and treatments, it's hard to know which one is actually the best as well as which one will work for you. I know I have spent lots of money on various products to help keep acne at bay. Reading review sites can be helpful to see which products work best for most people. I think lots of people like to read which products have actually worked for others and which have mostly been a waste of money.

Did You Know What to Do When There are Mistakes on Websites?

Did you know what to do when there are mistakes on websites?

I have come across many typos, misspellings and grammatical errors in the many websites I have visited. Of course it is true that folks will always make mistakes. And it is to be expected that there will be mistakes made when businesses and individuals develop their websites. But when a professional site has several such errors, I find it to be rather a put off. I have often wondered if there is anything you can do about such mistakes. When I see printed mistakes, I usually don't point them out (though I recently did at a doctor's office.) I wonder though, don't such people want their business to look professional, to attract customers rather than to put them off? Do you leave a message pointing out the errors of the website? The one that really gets to me is when blog advertisers want bloggers to provide an ad for them. While the blogger is being compensated for doing so, s/he is expected to appear professional and have no typos, misspellings or grammatical errors. And rightly so, I say. But how about when the very advertiser that is being written for has such mistakes on its own website? Should the blogger say anything? How can s/he? Is it necessary? Is it appropriate? Should the blogger contact the advertiser or go through the ad company? Or just let it go?

Did You Know About Pronexin?

Did you know about Pronexin?

Having teenagers, I am often reading about the best products to fight acne. Today I found a website that offers pronexin reviews. It's hard to know what to use, as each product makes the claim that it works. What we have discovered is that each product probably does work. But they work to varying degrees for each individual. So go ahead and read the reviews but it seems like you will have to discover for yourself if a product works for you.

Did You Know About the Texas Art Asylum?

Did you know about the Texas Art Asylum?

This newly opened self proclaimed "part craft store, part thrift store, part salvage yard, part antique store" sounds like an artists haven. The art asylum takes in and redistributes used craft items ranging from acorns and antlers to wine bottles and yarn. There are a few things they will not take including computers and keyboards, phone books, pets or children! Seriously though, what a great idea this crafty lady had to start the art asylum. I wish her well and wish that I would have known about it before my garage sale!

Did You Know You Can Sell Your Used Books Online?

Did you know you can sell your used books online?

Perhaps you have even bought or sold used books using an internet auction site or book seller. I recently came across another way to sell used books online. Though I have not used them yet, I found a site that will pay the shipping for you to sell your books if you use their pre-paid shipping label. You can be reimbursed the price of media mail shipping if you choose to send your books via UPS. You can even use the site to sell back your used college textbooks.

Did You Know About American Idol Voters?

Did you know about American Idol voters?

I read a quick blog article last night on the recent American Idol voter demographics. I have not watched a lot of American Idol, and am less inclined to now that Ellen D. is a judge. But I found the blog post interesting. The author states that girls will find it hard to win the competition now because the voter demographics tend to be "40+ soccer moms and their tween daughters." And with the advent of texting, it has become more prevalent for these young girls to vote for the latest young male heart-throb. I don't much care who wins the show, but I did find it an interesting sign of our current culture.

Did You Know I Have Another Chance to Tri This Weekend?

Did you know I have another chance to tri this weekend?

This Saturday I will be doing a "sprint" triathlon. This weekend's event features a pool swim. We will be started every ten seconds and will swim six laps in the pool. Then we will get on our bikes for a fifteen mile ride. We finish with a three mile run. I am looking forward to it, though looking at last year's results, I will likely finish in the bottom of my age group. This is my kind of fat burner!

Did You Know Field Trips are Available to the Apple Store?

Did you know field trips are available to the Apple Store?

Students in K-12 classes are eligible for field trips to participating retail Apple Stores. Classes as large as 25 members can attend, and arrangements may be made for larger groups. The students can work to create something in store as part of the trip, or they can bring in a project and use the store as a theater. The kids can learn to use iPhoto, iMovie, build a website, learn how to make keynote presentations and learn how to use Garage Band. This sounds like a perfect field trip for kids of all ages!

Did You Know Why People Want Testosterone Boosters?

Did you know why people want testosterone boosters?

After having a houseful of teenaged boys over the weekend, I do have to wonder why people would even want testosterone boosters! After looking at the reasons, I am guessing only men would use these products (though I admit I am not sure of that.) Here are the reasons they use this type of product: build muscle, endurance, post workout recovery, burn fat, increase stamina and energy, and of course, increased sexual performance. I guess those are reasons that guys would be interested in using a testosterone booster.

Did You Know What You Would Do?

Did you know what you would do?

What if you came up on someone trying to steal a bike? What if you heard someone being degraded by a sales clerk or a coach? What if someone had been drinking and was going to drive off with a baby?

This is the premise of the ABC show What Would You Do? I have enjoyed watching the show and seeing what others would do in these given situations. They are set up with actors and then the scenes are played out to see what everyday folks would do. Sometimes it's surprising. It sure makes me stop to think "What would I do?"

Did You Know This is the Season for Weddings?

Did you know this is the season for weddings?

I have been to wedding showers the last two Saturdays. And have received an invitation for another. It is the season for weddings and wedding showers. There have been lots of moving around of decorations and other wedding accessories in preparation for all the excitement in the upcoming days. One of the mothers of one of the brides to be was happy that she did not cry at all through today's shower. Though she knows it will be different at the wedding itself!

Did You Know About Free Online Typing Tests?

Did you know about free online typing tests?

In preparing for the typing test I recently had to pass, I wanted to see what my words per minute were. I searched online and found several free online typing tests. I did these several times a day for a few days just to get a feel for what I would be doing in the test. I was happy to find that I typed above the minimum requirement. I feel like my blogging gives me practice in my typing skills, but it was nice to use the online typing test to see my wpm and my accuracy range. Hopefully it is good enough to get me a summer job.

Did You Know You Can Train for a Triathlon and Not Lose Weight?

Did you know you can train for a triathlon and not lose weight?

While watching the Biggest Loser this week, one of the contestants gained weight, even while training for a marathon. I believe it! The more I work out, the hungrier I am. I am not necessarily watching what I eat. I try not to indulge on junk food, but as for the rest, I don't limit. So I don't lose weight. I don't know if any kind of appetite suppressants would help or not, but working out hard makes me hungry!

Did You Know You Can Get Sore Thumbs?

Did you know you can get sore thumbs ?

From riding a bicycle. I took my bike out yesterday for an hour or so ride. It was not my first ride on it but it was an extremely windy day. That is the only difference I can figure. My thumbs hurt after the ride and so did my right arm. I guess I was hanging on quite fiercely through all that wind! And today, I woke up with sore thumbs! Guess I need to check into thumb exercises!

Did You Know About Receipt Printers?

Did you know about receipt printers ?

There are a few small businesses around here. Some will still write you a handwritten receipt. There is nothing wrong with a hand written receipt, I just wonder if they know about epson receipt printers. I did not know you could purchase just the receipt printer. It might come in handy for those small businesses.

Did you know May 21 is Bike to Work Day?

This Friday, May 21, Downtown Houston will host a city wide event in celebration of Bike Month. Beginning at Memorial Park, riders will cycle to City Hall. They will gather at 7am with departure at 7:30. It would be great fun to join all those cycling to City Hall. Refreshments will also be provided.

Did You Know I Got A New Bike?

Did you know I got a new bike?

I had been thinking of upgrading to a new road bike, one that is more suited to "racing" triathlons. When I asked the local bike store owner when his next sale is going to be, he proceeded to show me the bike he could make me a deal on. Seems like last year he ordered eight purple and white bikes! He only had a couple left.

When I went back in, he told me that if I trade in my old bike he could get the price of the new bike to about half the original price. He let me test ride it. Then he fitted the bike to me. Then he made me a good deal on (ugly) shoes, cleats and pedals. All in all I spent less on the whole deal than I did on my previous bike. Of course that one is gone. I already miss it. But I think I will be able to live with purple.

Did You Know I Learned Something New About My Microwave?

Did you know I learned something new about my microwave?

I have had it for two or three years (or more!) And I just learned that there is a thirty second button! So if I just press this little button, it will add thirty seconds to the existing time. Pretty handy!

I also found out that you cannot use the express timer (where you hit a number 1-6 and it cooks for that many minutes) while using the timer. For some reason, it just won't let me.

I am glad I found out these two little tidbits to help me better utilize my microwave!

Did You Know I Think I Have Exercise Induced Asthma?

Did you know I think I have exercise induced asthma?

I have joked for some time about this. I really thought it had more to do with all the wind and pollen in the air. Whenever I cycle, I cough a lot. It is not as bad when I do indoor spin class, so I think it has to do with the allergens in the air. And the last few times I have been running, I find it hard to catch my breath, breathe deeply or feel like my chest is clear. I don't cough as much when running but there is a little coughing accompanying those other symptoms.

I did not know that there is a real possibility of having exercise induced asthma. But after doing just a little reading online, I have found that this is not uncommon. I have felt like this is just a thing that will pass. But now I am wondering if my performance could be just a little bit better if I used an inhaler to clear my airways. May be something I bring up in the future, after I get my foot problems dealt with.

Did You Know Our Event T-shirts Didn't Fit?

Did you know our event T-shirts didn't fit?

The women's shirts for the triathlon last weekend were cut very snug. I ordered the size I'd ordered before but the shirt is just too tight. After talking to several other women (who are in better shape) I found that they too could not wear their race t shirts. One lady was smart enough to ask while at the event and got her shirt exchanged. I was disappointed not to be able to wear my shirt and thought I would just ask if there are any left and if I can mail mine back to exchange. I thought since I was a "nobody" in one of the smaller races, they would disregard my request.

Sure enough, I got a quick response. I can exchange my shirt for a better size! They are going to mail me another shirt and hopefully this one will fit!

Did You Know Our Triathlon Turned into a Biathlon?

Did you know our triathlon turned into a biathlon?

Because of high winds early Saturday morning, the swimming leg of our triathlon was cancelled! They decided to just cut out the swim and start us with the cycling portion and then finish with the run. I wondered if the winds were so bad how we would cycle. We were started with a "time trial" start. Each row went to the gate and participants were started three seconds apart. This made for a lot of athletes out on the course at the same time, which means I think they were more lenient on the "drafting rules" since we could not help being close together.

I was disappointed that the swim was cut out. But as tired as I was after the race, I wonder how I would have felt if I had swam 9/10 of a mile first! My husband thinks our legs would have been more ready to go than standing around all morning before hopping on the bike. I will post a longer description of race day on my other blog.

Did You Know About Tri4Him?

Did you know about Tri4Him ?

This Christian triathlete group is a very friendly group of athletes! We met up with some of them today in preparing for our upcoming triathlon. The members were all very friendly and helpful, positive and encouraging. They said a prayer before we headed out on the ride. They are very excited about their new group and we were very happy to meet them and join them on the ride today!
