Did You Know My Husband Celebrated a Birthday This Week?

Did you know my husband celebrated a birthday this week?

This week my husband had a birthday. He is not big on birthdays, he did not even want a cake. But in honor of his big day, I thought I would tell you some of my favorite things about him.

He is funny and he is fun to be with. He is always planning something. He is a good man and I am thankful he loves me and he loves his kids. He is a talented man. He is my best friend. He gives his best to everything. He is so cute. But most important to me, he loves and honors God above all else.

Now you can buy maternity clothes that are cute, trendy, and sexy. You can find the latest fashions to make moms-to-be look good. Being pregnant no longer means frumpy tent dresses. I know when I was pregnant, I looked and felt neither cute, trendy nor sexy. If only I'd have known about the great maternity clothes available for the soon to be mother.

Did You Know How Frustrating It Is To Transition to Public Schools?

Did you know how frustrating it is to transition to public schools?

After only two days and now that my son has attended every class (they are on block scheduling), gotten his supply list(now that the stores are out of everything), and his information packets, I was feeling the tension and frustration of the transition.

Going from being in charge of and having to arrange every minute detail to knowing almost nothing that is going on is very unsettling. I am not sure of some of the procedures, am not keen on some of the policies, have to sign permission for things I am not sure I want to give permission for. When asking for information I have been a)unable to get through to the school on its phone line, b)cannot access the principal, c) emailed said principal with no response as of yet, d) was condescended to by the receptionist at the desk.

The issued of getting in touch with the principal has been resolved, I have signed said permission forms. The traffic is still unbearable (my son was tardy today.) And the demands of the basketball team, when we don't know yet if he's even made the team, are another monkey wrench.

There is much change in transitioning to public school, and much frustration involved. But we have gotten through the first week, with much tears and happiness, a true emotional roller coaster. Surely it can only get better from here...

Did You Know The Best Singles Ad Ever?

Did you know the best singles ad ever?

This has to be one of the best singles ads ever printed. My cousin emailed this to me. It is reported to have been listed in the Atlanta Journal. I don't know if that is true or not, but it is a pretty clever listing:

"SINGLE BLACK FEMALE seeks male companionship, ethnicity unimportant. I'm a very good girl who LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your pickup truck, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire. Candlelight dinners will have me eating out of your hand. I'll be at the front door when you get home from work, wearing only what nature gave me. Call (404) 875-6420 and ask for Daisy, I'll be waiting."

Over 15,000 men found themselves talking to the...

Did You Know Our Library Has No Hard Copy Card Catalog?

Did you know our library has no hard copy card catalog?

I did know this from an incident before, but was reminded of it last week when I was in the library. I am all for technology and love how easy it is to look for books with the online catalog. But there are times when the computer system is down, or even when every computer in the library is taken. I asked once if they had an old fashioned card catalog so that I could go ahead and look something up. Nope! That is indeed a thing of the past.

Did You Know About Jefferson's Dig?

Did you know about Jefferson's Dig?

This area, now known as Big Bone Lick State Park, is replicated with bones discovered upon William Clark's return from exploring the Western US. In a large salt marsh in Kentucky, Clark's crew dug up thousands of specimens and had them shipped to Jefferson in the White House. Among these were rib bones so large that pioneer Robert McAfee used them for tent poles.

Did You Know About Reverse Auctions?

Did you know about reverse auctions?

If you love to play in online auctions, you gotta take a look at bid4prizes. This online auction bidding game takes the concept and reverses it. What this means is that the winner of the online auction is actually the person who comes in with the lowest unique bid. (Unique meaning that no one else has placed that bid.) Anyone can bid, folks may even place the same bid, but the winner will only be the one with the lowest unique bid. The winner then pays only the cost of shipping.

This game seems to be addicting. It’s fun, it’s easy and it’s free to play online. Or if you prefer to play using your cell phone, you can purchase a bid package for unlimited bidding.

There are many great prizes to bid on. You might be the winner of an Apple Iphone, HDTV, even a Scion XB. There are other fun ways to play too. You can enter the sweepstake to win the cash prize or other free gifts .

Did You Know About Mr. Bean's Holiday?

Did you know about Mr. Bean's Holiday?

I've not ever watched his PBS program, and now, he's made it to the big screen. I am hearing talk about Mr. Bean and his journey across France. He is silly, in an almost silent-movie-era kind of way. He doesn't need vulgar or crude language or humor, nor does he rely on sex to sell a movie. Apparently this movie takes us back to another much simpler era. I heard him compared to the Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin.?

Did You Know About the Glass House?

Did you know about the Glass House?

Architect Phillip Johnson's weekend house, the Glass House is located in New Canaan, CT. Though people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, it seems as if Johnson is the only person to have slept here. It is a small, unique home built entirely of glass and steel. The bathroom however is a windowless bricked in column.

The house truly is not so exposing as it may seem. It is situated on a wooded 47 acre estate, shielded by a stone wall, beneath a canopy of oaks and maples, looking down onto a pond and meadow.

Did You Know This Is the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Little Rock Nine?

Did you know this is the fiftieth anniversary of the Little Rock Nine?

This month Central High School will remember the 50th anniversary of the Little Rock Nine-the nine African American students who were to integrate the schools there. This year a new visitor center will open adjacent to the school. A two day commemoration will be filled with speeches, a fund raiser and an exhibition of the Emancipation Proclamation.

My dad was actually traveling through the area during this time when he was a young boy. He remembers seeing the state troopers and his dad telling him why they were there. Later, my dad's high school was the first in his area to integrate black students.

Did You Know You Can Browse for Furniture Online?

Did you know you can browse for furniture online?

A couple of years ago we were looking for a "phone table". But we had specifics we wanted in mind. It was not really just an ordinary phone table, as we wanted it fairly tall, have a shelf or two, and ideally the shelves would be hidden with a door. We spent a fair amount of time driving all over the metro area looking for just the right table. I looked online many times to get an idea of what we wanted. Looking for furniture online saves time and money. We even ended up purchasing online. Furniture stores like Century furniture know that when consumers start looking for furniture, they often begin with internet searches to save, time, money and gas.

Did You Know The Best Time to Buy New Furniture?

Did you know the best time to buy new furniture?

It won't be long now til my kids leave home. And one thing I have been debating for several years is when is the best time to buy new home furniture? We bought a $500 couch when we were young marrieds, a huge expense at the time. It has now seen us through almost 20 years. I didn't want to replace it with toddlers, I mean, it was great to jump on, and didn't matter if it got spit up or juice on it. I always thought by the time we had teens we might think about replacing it. But you know, with teens you have big sweaty boys, still spilling juice and soda, so I think I will wait a little longer.

Did You Know About Gender Color Associations?

Did you know about gender color associations?

I posted recently about how researchers are trying to show that females prefer the color pink over blue. I cannot say if this is true or not, as I know many females who like pink and many who like blue. I do know that we have come to associate certain colors to each gender. It seems however that this is a transient fashion statement, which has changed throughout the years. I have read before how in the 1800's that blue was "for girls" while pink was "for boys." I could only find another blog posting to back this up. It seems the switch in color preference did not come about until after WWII. We are now seeing a swing back towards the other direction, as we can see in today's newest fashion craze- "real men wear pink".

Did You Know About the Fork Tailed Palm Swift?

Did you know about the fork tailed palm swift?

This bird is found in the Amazon palm grove. They have been known to build nests out of plant matter, saliva and feathers. What has just recently been observed is how they get these feathers. The have been seen ripping them right off another bird's back, in flight! It was reported that the swift circles high above his home, then strikes his "victim" in the back and pulls the feathers off. The swift apparantly prefers parrot and pigeon feathers to build his nest.

Did You Know How Long Ago People Began Cultivating Seeds?

Did you know how long ago people began cultivating seeds?

It has been known that people long ago domesticated plants, cultivating them rather than having to go out collecting wild plants. It has not been known when humans first began doing this. It seems that it has been over 10,000 years ago. The oldest New World evidence was found in a study in the Peruvian Andes. There were found some squash seeds dated about 9,240 years ago. Because squash does not grow wild here, it is concluded that the squash was brought in by early agriculture communities moving into the area.

Did You Know Singapore is Working to Lose Its Uptight Image?

Did you know Singapore is working to lose its uptight image?

According to an article in the most recent Smithsonian magazine, this tiny island nation is trying to shake its uptight image. It is beginning to focus on culture, the arts and fun. Because Singapore is at the crossroads of trade routes, it has an ideal location. Since its independence in 1965, Singapore has undergone a transformation. For example, the Boat Quay used to be a dangerous place after dark, but now has become a hot spot for night life. Extended bar hours, the Fashion Festival, and not-to-be-missed Vivo City are all coming together to help Singapore shed its all work and no play image.

Did You Know What it Takes to be a Perfumer?

Did you know what it takes to be a perfumer?

It may not be as easy as you think. Third generation perfumer Celine Ellena shares her experience as a female perfumer. (This industry is usually dominated by men.)

She began learning from her grandfather who told her to smell the flowers in the garden. She says she learned much from her grandfather, who died without knowing that Celine wanted to become a perfumer. Although she has been creating scents for 14 years, she says that young perfumers today must take chemistry. She has a degree in psychology and says it is very helpful, since perfume has such a deep seated meaning for each of us, it is very sensual, very personal. She sees fragrance as something mysterious, a way to send a mysterious message. She says from the beginning it was a way to talk with God.

Did You Know Where to Find Mustang Radiators?

Did you know where to find Mustang radiators?

When I was in High School, my dad bought a black Mustang convertible. He would let me drive it around town, to school, and other places. I loved it and we all thought it was pretty cool. One boy even said it upped my social status at school. (HA!) One day I was heading to my boyfriend's house and I had almost made it when the Mustang stopped. I left it on the side of the road and was luckily close enough to walk.

Too bad there wasn’t a Radiator.com back then. Here is the place to find a replacement for any Ford radiator. They stock thousands of after stock and upgrade radiators for all models of every year. It would have been the perfect place to find a replacement Mustang Radiator.

If you are looking for a replacement Ford radiator, you can be sure to find it at this online radiator stock house. Because each Ford vehicle comes with its own individualized radiator and radiator needs, Radiator.com is sure to have the radiator just right for your Ford, whether you are replacing a rusted, leaky radiator or just doing preventative maintenence.

Did You Know About Traditional Medicinals Herbal Tea Remedies?

Did you know about Traditional Medicinals Herbal Tea Remedies?

I haven't been feeling well the last two days. Stuffy nose and head and a very sore throat. I did finally break down and take some advil yesterday, my throat hurt so bad. I do hate to take medicines, so my friend told me about Traditional Medicinals herbal tea remedies.

I am using the Breathe Easy and the Throat Coat (I could only find the kid's formula) and taking some airborne. The teas actually do help, but they are very temporary effects. The Breathe Easy has a very strong smell and aftertaste, but the last cup I drank I was able to handle fairly well. The Throat Coat isn't so hard to take, as it is formulated for kids. I am hoping to stave this cold off and not have to take any more medicine.

Did You Know Women Really Do Prefer Pink?

Did you know women really do prefer pink?

At least according to one scientific study . Some scientists are saying that women prefer colors in the pink range because of evolutionary needs to choose and cook the best foods. I for one don't find this to be such a true statement. I like blue best, as does my mom, granny and my daughter. And we are not the only girls I know who prefer blue to pink. However, these scientist's do say that the preference for blue is universal and that female's penchant for pink is on top of this liking for blue.

Did You Know About Our Home Upgrades?

Did you know about our home upgrades?

We recently had a lot of work done on our house. We took out a large loan to get most everything done that needed done. Of course, house work is never done, so a few items had to be left undone, but the stuff that was falling down around us had to be replaced and took first precedence. We now have a new roof, new siding around the windows, new eaves, and a new metal shed.

My husband took care of choosing each of these items, though I did have a say in colors. I think he had most fun shopping for steel buildings. He loves to dream big, and we did get a shed much larger than the one we had before, one that should last the time we are in this house.

Did You Know About Schlitterbahn Galveston?

Did you know about Schlitterbahn Galveston?

We took the kids for a last little summer fling down to Galveston Island today to check out the new Schlitterbahn. Ok, it's a year old, but we have not tried it out before today. The weather was nice and it was the only day before we hit the school books that we could work it in.

We got there about 10:40 am, the park opens at ten. The crowds at the ticket booth were large and slow moving. Luckily, we had purchased tickets on the way at a local grocery store, so we could walk right up to the gate. One thing that I do like about the Schlitterbahn parks is that they still allow you to bring your coolers and picnics into the park. This is great and saves money on eating, and you know you get hungry out in the sun and water all day.

The park itself was nice enough. It was not as large as the one in New Braunfels, but had plenty to keep us having fun all day. We rode several slides, preferring the ones that require tubes. The lazy river and river rapids were also great fun. The crowds got larger as the day wore on, but all in all, we were still able to enjoy the attractions and the lines moved fairly quickly.

Did You Know Our Local Gas Station Was Already Out of Gas?

Did you know our local gas station was already out of gas?

Remembering the evacuation of nearly two years ago, the impending possibility of another as hurricane Dean approaches the Gulf has many people scrambling to prepare. Our local news this morning showed stores with empty shelves of water and already out of generators. The news team and highway emergency signs were encouraging everyone to fill their gas tanks and keep them full. By the time we got gas today, because we were going to my grandmother's and not because of a threat of a hurricane, our gas station was out of everything except super unleaded (which they were selling at the same price as regular unleaded.)

The storm hasn't even made it into the Gulf yet.

Did You Know Eating Poppy Seeds Really Can Give a Positive Reading on a Drug Test?

Did you know eating poppy seeds really can give a positive reading on a drug test?

Last night as I was eating my salad with my favorite poppy seed dressing, I told my son that he better be glad he doesn't like that dressing as it could give him a false reading on a drug test. We went on to debate if that is actually true or not, as I'd only heard it from a sitcom years ago.

I went online and found it confirmed by Snopes, myth busters and other sites. It seems that there have been several incidences of people failing drug tests after consuming poppy seeds. Because opiates are derived from poppy seeds, the tests will pick up on the appearance of it in your system.

Because this had gotten to be a problem, the level of opiates found to be in your system was raised from 300 microunits to 2000 before failing a drug test. So now, eating a little dressing or a bagel with these seeds should not be enough to cause you to fail your next drug test.

Lap band surgery is actually a procedure of making tiny incisions and inserting long shafted instruments to place the silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The surgeon also inserts a tiny camera to view the operation on a monitor. The band is secured around the stomach much like a wristwatch fits the wrist. The band is locked securely around the stomach. This creates a smaller stomach pouch, causing the sensation of feeling full faster, causing you to eat less. In this manner, you can feel full and satisfied quicker, meaning you will eat less and lose weight.

Did You Know You Can Teach Your Kid to Drive?

Did you know you can teach your kid to drive?

I have known about home taught driver's ed for a while, but now the time is fast approaching for us to start looking into it. When I was young, we took driver's ed at school, but this is no longer offered in schools (at least not around here) and many homeschool kids needed another option, as private driving schools are very expensive. There are many home taught driving courses available. It seems that first you must register with your state, then you will receive a packet of information and approved home taught driving courses. The instructions to get started will be included in the packet.

Did You Know About the Exclusive Immigration Law Group?

Did you know about the exclusive immigration law group?

My father has a friend who has been in the US for around twenty years. He is from Mexico and has been trying for all these years to get official status to be here. He has applied and gone through lots of paperwork to try to be able to stay here and eventually bring his family here.

But he is now facing deportation very soon. I do not know any of the details, why he cannot get status to stay here. And immigration is a very real concern for many US citizens.

It is so difficult to understand why so many immigrants are being granted amnesty and allowed to stay and work here, and at the same time, some like my dad's friend who have taken proper steps to do it the right way, are not allowed to stay.

The law office of Root Law Group is an exclusive immigration practice. They have dedicated their practice to helping the immigrant community obtain lawful status in the US. They have a 95% approval rate on applications. They use professional and creative means to help their clients reach the goal of lawful status in the US. The staff speaks seven different languages: Russian, Spanish, Hungarian, Polish, German, Punjabi, and Hindi.

Did You Know Fires Can be Seen From Space?

Did you know fires can be seen from space?

My blogging friend Montucky has been chronicling the Chippy Creek Fire that has been burning for two weeks or more. The fire is huge and keeps on growing. So far he says the fire has burned over 128 square miles. He photographed some of the small planes dropping slurry to help control the fire. One of the comments made to him mentioned the fact that fires can be seen from the space shuttle and the space station. Montucky concurred that this particular fire was visible in some photos taken from space.

Did You Know Today is Fish Camp?

Did you know today is fish camp?

In 11 days, my son starts public school for the first time. He will be going to a new local high school. Today is fish camp. He will be up there all afternoon making new friends, learning how to follow his schedule (they don't get their real ones til the first day of school!), getting his ID and learning about the school. I think fish camp is a good idea and will help the kids feel more comfortable on the first day of school.

Did You Know About the Step Strechter?

Did you know about the step stretcher ?

This is a great device to help stretch your Achilles as it stretches all the way up your leg. The more you do this, the deeper you can get your stretch, allowing you even more relief from tense, tight muscles.

I have suffered from plantar faciitis for a while now. I have been using the step stretcher regularly, about three times a week for about six months now. I have gotten more relief since I started using it than I did for the preceding two years.

It is a bit expensive at first sight, but the relief it brings is worth it. I got this one at my running shoe store, but they are available online and perhaps at other places around town.
