Did you know Singapore is working to lose its uptight image?
According to an article in the most recent Smithsonian magazine, this tiny island nation is trying to shake its uptight image. It is beginning to focus on culture, the arts and fun. Because Singapore is at the crossroads of trade routes, it has an ideal location. Since its independence in 1965, Singapore has undergone a transformation. For example, the Boat Quay used to be a dangerous place after dark, but now has become a hot spot for night life. Extended bar hours, the Fashion Festival, and not-to-be-missed Vivo City are all coming together to help Singapore shed its all work and no play image.

There is a lot of truth to this, silken. It can be funny though, at times. I was working on a project with a group of artists last year, in conjunction with some higher ups and their goal of expanding the arts scene in Singapore. In the end, the project was crushed under a mountain of red tape.
Sigh.
the article was pretty interesting, talking about how singapore has pretty much pulled itself up by the boot straps, but too straight laced, hence the new "movement". one artist wondered how a movement in this direction can be orchestrated by a government, meaning how it can't really work to demand a society to become more "artsy"...making sense? if not I'll have to find the quote...
