Did You Know About Vlad the Impaler?

Did you know about Vlad the Impaler?

I've been reading The Historian. A really creepy, spooky book about the connection between Vlad the Impaler and the legend of Dracula. The name Dracula comes from the name carried by Vlad III, which means son of Dracul, his father Vlad II. Dracula means dragon or devil in Romanian. I have learned some about Vlad III's torturous tactics in ruling his land. In the book The Historian there is a quote that really hit me in pertaining to this and many other historical facts. The narrator within the story is talking mentions as she learned some of these things, she realized her father had never told her about history's terrible moments, they had never really hit home with her. She says "history's terrible moments were real".

I have thought about this on a number of occasions. It's one thing to read through a history book taking in facts. But when you stop to think about, dwell on the fact of slavery, the civil rights movement, the holocaust, medieval practices...the impact of knowing that history's terrible moments are real should help us to learn something. Perhaps learn something about human nature, where we have been as a society, and where we should want to go no more.
