When the Rosetta Stone was found in 1799 by one of Napolean's soldiers, it brought about the keys to breaking the code. The Rosetta Stone contained hieroglyphic writing along with demotic writing and Greek. Champollion was able to use his knowledge of Ancient Greek to decode the hieroglyphs. This was the beginning to understanding the secret writing of the Ancient Egyptians.
