We have been reading this week about medieval weapons. This was probably my oldest nephew's favorite so far. We read about all the different kinds of swords, spears, maces and other weapons of the time. I had forgotten what the "spikey ball" was called, but that is the one that fascinated my nephew. It is a "flail" we learned. We also learned about "caltrops" (not cow trips!) which are spiked weapons thrown to the ground to stop horses (and other animals of war) from advancing and rendering them lame. My nephew learned that war is a brutal thing that we should not celebrate.
