Did You Know About Ratatouille?

Did you know about Ratatouille?

We took the family to see this movie today. It is a good, light hearted, family movie. It is a fun look at a rat who becomes a chef. I did get freaked out in a couple of places. Even if they are computer antimated "cute" rats, there were still a couple of places where I got the "willies".

Overall, a nice show for the whole family.

Did You Know You Can Compare Maytag Dishwashers Online?

Did You Know You Can Compare Maytag Dishwashers Online?

Two years ago, we replaced a few of our appliances, due to some remodeling brought about by water damage. One of our purchases was a Maytag Dishwasher. Like many people these days, we wanted to do some product research before heading out to buy. It is so easy to search for products on line rather than driving all over town comparing products and prices. Now, Krillion makes this even easier.

Krillion is unique in that you can search local retailers before purchasing large items like appliances. Krillion gathers the specific local information as well as specific product information. You can now spend your time quietly searching for what will meet your needs without pushy or incompetent sales people. Then when you are ready, you can go to the specific retailer in your area, ready to make the purchase.

Did You Know Passport Rules Have Been Postponed?

Did you know passport rules have been postponed?

Many, many travelers have had to re-arrange or cancel trips due to the back log created by the new mandatory passport laws. Because of this backlog, the rules have been postponed for citizens re-entering from Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. Citizens will be granted entry with a birth certificate and a driver's license. The required passports will go into effect next year, but officials are hoping this postponement will help ease some of the backlog.

Did You Know About the Hyrax?

Did you know the Hyrax?

I think I have heard of this before, but never seen one before. It is a small animal that lives in Africa. It can climb trees. There are guide hairs on its back to help it feel how much space it has when crawling among the rocks. Although it looks like a rodent, its closest relatives are the elephant and the manatee! (I've got to look up that connection!) Not so clear on the relation, but the hyrax forms an outgroup, with the manatee being the closes relation. The hyrax are down to four different species still recognized today.

Did You Know The Difference Between a Paint and a Pinto Horse?

Did you know the difference between a paint and a pinto horse?

Me either. I always thought they were the same. But obviously, there is some difference. I have heard some folks try to explain it, and decided to look it up on the Net anyway! I am still a little unsure of what all the difference is. Here is the best definition I came across:

"Pinto isn't a breed, but there are registries for horses of this color. Like the Palomino Horse Breeders Association, which registers palomino-colored horses of different breeds, pinto registries accept various pinto-colored horses. These are not breed registries, but color registries. The Pinto Horse Association of America (PtHA) accepts a wide range of horse and pony breeds for registration, as long as the horses meet color requirements.

Paint horses, just like Arabians and Quarter Horses, are a unique breed of horse. Registered Paints are part of the American Paint Horse Association. One characteristic of many Paint horses are their pinto coloration, however the registry is based on bloodlines, not just color. Horses of Paint blood may be registered even if they have little or no white. Such horses are called "breeding stock" Paints.
Quarter Horses or Thoroughbreds that are born with pinto markings are also allowed in the registry. When you think of a Paint horse, however, you're usually thinking of one that's pinto colored."

This is taken from The Ultimate Horse Site . For a more detailed explantion, follow the link to their page.

Did You Know About My Daughter the Queen?

Did you know about my daughter the queen?

My daughter is invloved with a local community college theater department. This summer she is performing in The Spell of Sleeping Beauty. She was cast in a small role as the "false princess" (I think due to her resemblance of the actress playing Sleeping Beauty). The girl cast in a larger role of the queen was unable to be in the cast, so my daughter was "promoted" to the role of queen.

The show opened this week. My daughter is doing a really great job in her role. This is her biggest part yet, with the most lines. She is doing really well! (And looks so pretty, too!)

Did You Know You Might Have to Pay to Have It Your Way?

Did you know you might have to pay to "have it your way"?

When I was a kid, I remember Burger King had the advertising slogan "Have It Your Way". As an adult consumer, I now realize just how important that is. Recently, I have noticed that I sometimes have to pay small fees to "have it my way". Many of these fees seem so senseless to me. For example, last night, I ordered a thin crust pizza from a local pizzaria (not a chain.) I got charged .25 for thin crust. Huh? I got charged for less crust?? A couple months ago, I took my son to an out of town basketball tournament. After one of the games, he wanted a milk shake. We stopped at Sonic and he ordered a chocolate milk shake. We were charged .25 for chocolate! It is a chocolate milkshake for crying out loud!

I am sure there are countless other examples. Many times I do not even notice these small fees. But I am going to start being on the look out now!

Did You Know About Orlando Vacation Villa Rentals?

Did you know about Orlando Vacation Villa Rentals?

We have not been to Orlando since 2002. Our kids are ready and asking to go back. We are hoping to make a family trip sometime next year. I hear that Orlando and its theme parks have changed over the last five years. With all the competition within the amusement parks, there is always some new ride or attraction to catch.

Our last trip, we stayed in a hotel. Since our kids are bigger now, we may look at Orlando vacation villa rentals for a place to stay. Bigger kids need a bigger place to stay. I would love a spacious home away from home. And a pool in the backyard means we don’t have to share the pool with others.

I like the convenience of checking dates and availability online. I might even find a package deal. The rates are competitive with standard hotels. We would be able to rent the size home that will best suit our needs.

I love being able to get up to the minute news on all things Orlando. I can even browse articles and information to help us come up with the best vacation plan.

Did You Know About Nancy Drew?

Did you know about Nancy Drew?

My daughter and her friend have been waiting for the new Nancy Drew movie to come out. Today was the big day! We went to see an afternoon matinee. The show was pretty good, the lead character was a breath of fresh air amid the Los Angeles teen crowd. The movie was a little more "scary" than I thought it would be, but I think it was just right for a few tween/teen girls to enjoy together. (Personally, I think the curse words really detracted from the movie.)

Did You Know You Could Buy Your Next Used Car Online?

Did you know you could buy your next Used Car online?

A new online car buying website is finding its Google ratings are going through the roof. They have only been operational since August of 2006, but they are such a hit with customers, both sellers and buyers.

Buy Your Car is utilizing a fresh new approach to buying your car online. Instead of just listing your car with it’s picture and price, you can take advantage of the full information provided to make sure this is the car for you.

Each dealer who lists a car with Buy Your Car will get standard listings and individual listings. Dedicated pages list cars by make and price. You can search for used cars in the UK as well as private sales.

Buy Your Car feels they are offering the car buyer a better option than other online car sellers. One such service is the ability to see the distance the desired car is from you. Instead of driving say 100 miles to see one car, you can search for other cars that may be in your interest and price range. Then you will be able to view all the cars in that area to make a better decision on which car is right for you.

Also provided on this website are articles to help you make the best decision when buying a used car. You can learn what questions you need to ask the seller, how to inspect a used car, find advice on avoided a scam, and much more.

Did You Know How to Store Items To Save Space?

Did you know how to store items to save space?

It seems as if we all need to save some space in our homes. But often, we have the need to store items that may take up too much space. If you have seen the "space bags" then you will love this home remedy from Haley's Hints. You can make your own "space bags" using a trash bag and your vaccum cleaner.

Simply put your airy, fluffy items into the trash bag. Slip your vaccum hose in between items. Pull trash bag securely around hose and turn it on. The vaccum will suck up the excess air in the items, flattening them to only inches. Use a rubber band to close the trash bag. Later, when you are ready to use the item, simply open the bag and the items will fluff back up in seconds.

This works great with things like pillows, clothes, stuffed animals, anything "fluffy".

Did You Know About Horses for Kids at Risk?

Did you know about Horses for Kids At Risk?

Last week, we heard about a new program in our area involving horses and kids at risk.

This is a brand new idea from a couple of homeschooling moms. It is really just now getting off the ground. One of the lady's has a "farm", for lack of a better word, with all kinds of animals-horses, cow, chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats. She is starting a non-profit program where "kids at risk" can come out and experience life on a farm. They help with chores, which are listed on a daily calendar. After the chores are all done, they can saddle and tack the horses and ride.

The two moms are there to help and they are also implementing a mentor program. This is where teens will work toward being the ones who help teach the kids to ride. Right now, they are taking any kid, whether considered "at risk" or not (they feel like all kids are "at risk" in different ways.) There is no charge for the program. The kids love it, from doing chores to riding and caring for their assigned horse.

This program sounds like it will be a really good thing for those kids who are involved. One "at risk" child has already made a lot of progress in her relationship with one of the mothers who started the program. I think it will be so good, for both the kids "at risk" and those not classified this way. They will learn to help each other and contribute to keeping the place running smoothly. It takes all of them working together. In the future, this will be a real boost to our society, as it will help both sets of children to function as contributing adults.

Did You Know The Average Child Will Lose One Month of Learning Over the Summer?

Did you know the average child will lose one month of learning over the summer?

As a homeschooling mother, this has been a concern of mine for the last four years or so. When my kids were small, I didn't mind taking a summer break from school work. It allowed them to have time to play with their friends who went to public school. As my kids got older and moved toward the junior high years, I could see a learning deficit develop over the summer months. When my son got to jr. high, I really hated to take a summer break, because it meant too much time reviewing math come fall. But at this point, he was involved in youth group, which provided many activities during the summer months. I've really been torn by how to help prevent this "loss of learning" over the summer.

One answer is Summer Camps provided by places like Score Educational Center. They provide learning camps which will help to keep the children on track with their learning. This could be especially important for Texas school children this year, as they will have almost one extra month of summer vacation.

Blogging Marketplace Secures $7 Million Series B

Draper Fisher Jurvetson leads round and joins Board of Directors

ORLANDO, FL – (June 12, 2007) – PayPerPost, the leading marketplace for advertisers to reach bloggers and other consumer content creators, today announced it has completed a $7 million second round investment led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, an investor in the company's Series A and one of the world’s leading high-technology venture capital firms. The financing brings the total amount of capital raised by PayPerPost to over $10 million, giving the company considerable resources for further development as the industry’s leading Consumer Generated Advertising marketplace. Additional participants in the round include existing investors Inflexion Partners and Village Ventures as well as new investor DFJ Gotham. With this investment, DFJ Managing Director Josh Stein also joins PayPerPost’s Board of Directors.

“PayPerPost created this exciting new advertising space and has established itself as the industry leader,” said Ted Murphy, chief executive officer of PayPerPost. “Although we’ve only used a portion of our first round capital, this added support from investors unlocks significant growth potential. Our content creator and advertiser ROI metrics clearly demonstrate the upside for PayPerPost’s model. We intend to use this capital to build the infrastructure, visibility and professional expertise necessary to reach and retain a greater network of advertisers and content creators than ever before.”

Since its founding in June of 2006, PayPerPost has signed more than 6,500 advertisers to its groundbreaking service, which has enabled Consumer Content Creators to be compensated for their efforts discussing specific companies, products or services via blogs, videos or other media. The content creators are required to disclose relationships with advertisers on their blog, providing transparency for the end reader. Over 125,000 Internet postings, most in the form of blogs, have already earned money for their creators through PayPerPost’s innovative marketplace. PayPerPost recently released PayPerPost Direct, a disruptive new service that allows advertisers to contract and negotiate directly with individual bloggers they identify through a safe, managed system.

“PayPerPost has laid a strong foundation for the future,” noted Tim Draper, founder and managing director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson. “It continues to attract a critical mass of participants from both the advertising and blogging communities. Analogous to Overture’s sponsored search model, we believe PayPerPost’s business model holds disruptive potential and will enable the company to thrive in the evolving paid-content arena.”

To mark the $7 million dollar funding, PayPerPost has launched a new website detailing the company’s service offering at http://www.payperpost.com. Bloggers and advertisers can easily sign up at the site and begin leveraging the self service marketplace.

Did You Know A Great Homemade Carpet Cleaner?

Did you know a great homemade carpet cleaner?

This is another great tip from Haley's Hints. I love this because it is made from household articles and will save money. Combine 1/2 t ammonia, 3T dish soap, 1 t white vinegar and 3/4 C water. Beat until frothy or pour into a foaming bottle. Using only the foam and not the liquid, apply the foam to the carpet. Use a sponge to scrub away the dirt and grime.

Did you know you could find a mail order Russian bride?

I did not know there were men out there today looking for mail order brides, but there does seem to be a number of men looking for mail order Russian Brides . At Lover's Planet, you can look through profiles and photos of Russian and Ukranian women. Most of the Russian brides on this site are looking for a life partner, and they want to get to know the person before pursuing marriage. For Russian women, marriage is a top priority, even from an early age. With many Russian women, family comes first and a career comes later, if at all. To many of these women, dating implies commitment and marriage. The divorce rate with Russian women is lower when compared to that of Western women. A good number Russian women have well developed family attitudes. The women you will find at this site women are intelligent and well educated and are dedicated to a relationship.

Did You Know How To Keep the Flies Away from Your Picnic?

Did you know how to keep the flies away from your picnic?

I have not had a chance to try this yet, as I just learned about it on Haley's Hints. But he suggested that to keep flies away from your food on a picnic is place a sprig of fresh mint on your plate. If you do not have any fresh mint with you, he suggested trying a stick of mint gum. He said just lay it on your plate. I am going to give this one a try!

Did You Know How To Insert a Photo into Your Blog Post?

Did you know how to insert a photo into your blog post?

I love to read blogs that have photos included. It just really brings the article more home to me. I especially love to see things that I would otherwise not get to see-a Montana mountain vista, my friend's new garden, a baby's first step, a wedding in India...

I have often used Flickr.com to upload photos and get a code from them to embed a photo into my blog. It is very easy to do and keeps a sort of photo album of your shots for you.

I was recently having trouble inserting photos into these blogger posts. My dad, a blogging king, told me that on the tool bar of creating a new post there is an icon for uploading images. I tried it, and it is easy too.

So there are two options for you to try to insert a photo into your next blog post.

Did You Know About IVAs?

Did you know about IVAs?

These Individual Voluntary Arrangements, commonly called IVA, are becoming a popular way for residents of the UK to pay off their debts. The premise is that your creditors agree to let you pay a certain, agreed upon amount each month for perhaps five years. The payment is spread out to all the creditors. If there is any remaining balance at the end of the time period, it is written off and considered paid. There are protections put in place so that the creditors cannot call you once this process has begun.

This has become an increasingly popular way to pay off debt and avoid bankruptcy. Not all creditors will agree to a plan like this. If you need help paying off a collective debt of 15,000 pounds or more, it could be wise to see if an IVA could be right for you . It is good to know that there is now more than one way of tackling your debt problems .

Did You Know About Mark Schatzker's trip around the world?

Did you know about Mark Schatzker's trip around the world?

Recently, writer Mark Schatzker was commissioned by Conde Nast Traveler to make a trip around the world. The catch however was to make it in exactly 80 days, as in Jules Verne's novel. He could not take a plane or helicopter and could not travel over 100 miles per hour. The intent of this journey was slow travel-to reconnect with a way of travel that allows you to really see the sights. Some of the ways he got from here to there included a cruise, riding horseback and sea kayaking.

You can see Mark's photos and read his blog online. His journey will be highlighted in the September 2007 Conde Nast Traveler magazine

There are a few in our area, and one that we are looking at. They offer classes on the High School and college level. Each student is treated more like they would be in college where they are expected to do their work and submit it independantly. Students at this school will each receive a laptop computer for doing and submitting their work. When the student graduates from high school, s/he will not only be holding his/her diploma in one hand, s/he will be holding an associate college degree in the other.
