In reading about the Middle Ages, we have found that the word "bargain" started off under an entirely different connotation. In those days, it was wrong, even a crime, to make a profit. It was deemed the Christian ideal to share everything with everybody. Working after dark was considered wrong since you would make a profit over others who only worked during the day. The bargain was the law put in effect to "bar" the seller from making a "gain".
